Default buying a car with surface rust. thoughts?

i'm thinkin of pickin up a new car but it does have some surface rust. for the price of the car i cant really complain. honestly. it's a 00 GSR for $7k. about 2-4K under everyone elses gsr's.. lol..

but anyway. here are some pic of the rust on the rear fender as what appears to be surface rust.

if I were to buy this car and say I sanded and repainted that area do you guys think that would resolve the whole rust issue with this? Or do you guys think it may actually be deeper? and a bigger mess that I shouldnt get myslef into?

Here's the pic..

thanks..

and p.s. i need to make a decision by Friday.. lol..

Pull the black strip off that is inside the fenders. See how bad it is under that and the rest of the undercarage. If its all surface rust, its not that bad.

seems a bit pricey for a car with rust. I would keep on looking.

Pull off the rubber stripping and look along those edges and feel the backside of the wheel well. If you see rust that has started in there then it could be worse. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about that visable rust at all...sand it down and repaint over it.

I'd stay away. Looks like it might be a botched previous repair. Its hard to tell whats going on in that picture though, is that primer or white paint?

whoa whoa chill out girl scout. if its 2-4k under everyone else's gsr and its hard to find one please tell me why are you passing it down? you need to do more research on that area because really getting that fixed by a body shot STILL may be cheaper then finding one with no "rust"

^ rust that you see is generally 1/5th of the rust in that area. So technically yes you can "sand" it down, but it will come back. Thats bleeding through it looks like from the pictuers.

those are however original quarters. notice the pinch welds.

what is a pinch weld and how does that indicate that the panel is original?
That sounds like a useful tip when looking at buying a car....

when quarters have been replaced the inside of the lip on the quarter where it was welded on will be smooth almost all the time. Which means its been replaced beacuse filler is in there.

A pinch weld is exactly what it sounds like. 2 Electrodes pinch together with 2 pieces of metal in between and weld the pieces of metal together. If you feel inside a quarer panel you will feel these pinch welds. It holds the outer quarter panel skin onto the wheel well, trunk pan, sail panel, roof etc. all spots that are pinch welded. The factory doesnt actually lay full seam welds down. Go check your quarter panel (be careful not to cut yourself)... if they are OG, you will feel smooth, dimple, smooth, then another dimple. etc. when running your hand along the seam. Those dimples you feel are pinch welds from the factory.

looks like it had some body work and sat for sometime or something, then someone just shot over it. id take a magnet all over that area, and probably the rest of the car, to see if theres a crap load of bondo in there. and you should just pay a lil extra so you dont have to worry about stuff like this

dude that rust could be sprayed away. use an acid wheel cleaning solution. i use sulfuric acid at work on whit car to remove rail dust and hardened carbon dust and tar. now please keep in mind this is a DILUTED solution about 12% acid. you can find acid wheel wash at most autoparts stores if not its available online. rinse the car thoroughly, spray a nice misting over the problem areas. or the entire car if you wish to wash out the rail dust. (orange specs from locomotive transport.) then wash the car scrubbing with medium to heavy pressure. that acid will pull out the rust stains surrounding the problem area. sorry this is only a temporary fix. acid will destroy surface rust but unfortunaly it cant fix rust past a certain stage. but that will make it go away at this stage. do not think this is going to make it go away forever. just my 2 cents
