Transmission Mods
Ok guys so i have a little project car going on here since they were going to scrap it and i figured id keep it automatic for the sense of just having a cruiser....
I am doing an H22A1 head on an F22B1 block some nice power with VTEC too! got the whole motor for $220 not bad not bad so if anyone needs a block im going to clean it and see how the condition it.
Edit: Car is a 1994 Honda Accord EX
The serious issue here is that the transmission in these cars suck, they absolutely do. I do not even know if it will be able to hold up against another 60hp from the head swap and ecu tune im giving it, I am just wondering if there is anything i can do like add new springs to the transmission, or drill larger gasket holes or something to make it shift faster and somewhat harder without the lag in between gears, and able to withstand some more hp.
Side note, when i go in reverese there is this crazy clunking rattle noise.... only in reverse though when i gas it somewhat fast
Thanks HTechers!

Very few people have problems with those transmissions.
There's quite a few people using F22 trannys with H22 swaps, not just the head.
Your research is incorrect.
The only people having problem with trannys is MrWonderfull who is pushing 620 whp.
I think your F22 tranny can hold up to 200.

Thanks, but also is there any way to make the tranmission catch the gear faster so it doesnt take forever to shift?, is basically what im asking i think in the long run...
thanks for the quick reply though

Hmm, on an automatic?
You could swap to the H series tranny which has a shorter gear ratio so it would accelerate faster.
I'm not sure what you really mean by it taking forever to shift? It should be fairly quick

heh muff you never drove an auto accord did you.
dogmatic.. they like to hold first and second when you get on them.
as for a rebuild, i think theres only 1 tq converter upgrade.. i've never seen any other upgrades, expecially for internals. sorry man. you might have to try 5 spd

well since you said 220hp i might be a little screwed... because when this car is fully mine i will be stripping the weight and i don't think the tranny will hold under that amount of power i may have to swap trannies even though i don't want to....
Internal upgrades I am talking about are what some people do on american cars... ill try to link for a better idea... http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/index.html It is called modifying valve body to jerry specs or whatever is the article... i don't know what the internals of the auto accord tranny look like, but that should allow the tranny to shift between gears faster, and withold more numbers...
The tq converter is something different entirely, but i mean it does help but not for that kind of money hahah... i feel 2 secs could be saved off of a 1/4 mi time in general if this thing didn't lag as much as it did, but im not dragging it...just an idea...

Yes the F22 Auto will work with the Auto Car and H22A engine just bolt everything up. As if it was an Auto stock Auto Flywheel and Stall. They do make an aftermarket stall like a v8's gear speed is to contact for that however....
My sis had a EXR 92 accord Auto F22A6 and that thing shifted nice...
The problem you will have if you try to really harp on the transmission is that Honda Factory Auto's just can't take the abuse (Fact) and not much or if any more HP then the stock engine rating... I'd personally just leave it how it is if it shifts find and drop it in and go....

no thats not true on 5th gens. they are basically tanks.
and i know what you meant with internals, they don't make them for the accord.
and stripping out your car isn't going to give you hp, and your not going to get to 220 with just a headswap.
the 5th gen tranny was constructed already to have "harsh" shifts, because they are firm. they do not slip like the 6th gens, that have all the problems, but shift smooth at first. then the clutch packs wear out, and bam, theres your problem. unlike the 6th gen, the 5th gen trannys shift harder and firmer, with less slippage, and thats why they are able to go 300k+ with no rebuild.
tq is the only thing, and it would help you if you think your almight accord needs it.. which if your doing a headswap, it doesn't. stock tranny is fine.

I'll post up some results when i'm done
, but yeah this is just a track ***** and i drive an 2001 Audi S4 as a DD so this is just a fun project...
But weight loss will greatly increase acceleration i just said hp because only some people here know the physics behind the whole power:weight ratio deal...
