Default Compression question

If you have an engine with 11.5 comp(forged pistons) and instead of changing the pistons you fit a thicker head gasket to drop the compression in order to able to fit turbo. Will this work just fine or will you have to face disadvantages.

thanks

You could do that, but it's not recommended.

I don't know enough enough about the k series block, but if you're running forged pistons, i take it you have sleeved your block? why don't you lower the compression by getting new pistons? Or, does the K series block have that FRM or whatever sleeving that allows you to run forged pistons without having to resleeve the engine?

whatever the case is, I suggest building it right the first time around. It'll save you more money in repairs in the long run.

Thanks, my block is not sleeved...it has a block guard only.

sport compact car mag had an article about this a while back, and one point they made that not to many people concider is the fact that by increasing the head gasket thickness may alter your timming as well. plus the fact that you cant find a big enough head gasket to reduce the compression to the sweet spot anyway (i may be wrong, but i havent seen one)

your comp ratio is 11.5:1 and you are going to turbo this motor. my best advice is to not do it cheap, do it right the first time. your better off taking the head off, removing the high comp pistons and fitting in new low comp (8.5:1-9.5:1) instead. trust me, youll be happier in the long run.

high compression + boost = extreem cylinder pressures and heat leading to detonation and possible engine failure! go with a good forged 9.0:1 set and forget about it.
