Sound deadening matieral cost/questions. Please Look!!
Alright, well im in the middle of replacing the carpet in my del sol with my old sol's nicer carpet, and I was thinking, since the interior is gutted maybe I should add some sound deadening material. Adding a bit of weight isn't a big deal to me as my car isn't a track ***** or anything.
Question is, what kind do you guys recommend that is the most in-expensive, but still does the job. Also, how many square feet am I gonna need for this? Basically any tips/info would be GREAT. If it turns out being too expensive i'll just scrap the idea.
Thanks guys!

Get yourself a roll of "automotive carpet underlay", it is made of recycled cloth about 3/8" thick 30"+ wide, can be found at any automotive upholstery supply store, then all you need is a little " Sound deadening material" to do the dampening, the underlay will do the soundproofing.
I use this material all the time, even as dampening in sub boxes, it is very effective and cheap compared to the cost of even the cheapest dampening product.

Then if you do the carpet underlay properly, you should be impressed.
You will probably need to make 4-6 sections for your Del Sol, one each for the inside fire wall down to the floor pan, then probably two for the floor pan in front of the seats, one single from the fire wall where it meets the floor pan and back as far as the width of the roll, and from door sill to door sill, and up the sill/rocker panel hint when you need to make a sharp bend in the underlay, like where the floor pan meets the door sill, run a piece of good quality duct tape, [or any tape that will stick real good to the underlay, then on the back side "score" the fold line with a razor blade or very sharp carpet knife, [also used for cutting the underlay] about 3/4-7/8 of the way through, you will get a nice clean folded edge that will not fall apart.
You will probably need a second piece to fill the gap between the end of the first floor section to the seat braces, a section will also have to be made for under the seats, unless the second floor pan section is wide enough to also do under the seats, [seat brace sections would have to be cut out of that section] or a separate section made for under the seats, and then one section for behind the seats and one for under the rear storage area, you can even make one to cover the rear "fire wall"
If this is done properly and all the areas are covered without gaps, and no "bunching" or overlapping of the underlay, very minimal "mods" will have to be done to the edges of the stock carpet for it to fit properly with the added thickness of the underlay.

How much does this underlay cost? I know a guy that I think would carry the stuff, but im just wondering. Im not really sure how far under the dash and on the firewall i'll get. Im not looking to pull the dash out or anything. Im only looking to put it everwhere the carpet was. I'll also put it under the storage bins, and maybe on the rear wall.

When i pressure washed my carpet I went through and did 2 layers of peel and seel, followed by 2 layers of carpet padding material- Did a pretty good job- then i did my doors, and side panels- great great mod- added maybe 15 pounds (who cares?) and made driving a lot better
If you want to do sound deadening like dynamat then you will need approxemately 100 sq. ft. Check out ebay for some. should be able to get some cheap.
I dont know if people ever think of this but I found out after doing a complete sound deadening to my integra years ago. Your car will be more easily dented.
The deadening material removes the springy ness of your doors. Any slight impact will cause a dent that will not come back out. Using a better insulation between the door and door panel is a better idea. Also make sure you let the body shop know you have this stuff installed if you ever get in an accident. This stuff is flamable and will catch fire depending on which tools they use.

Alright, I went to an upholstery place today and talked to a guy I know that drives a DC5 and he said that the underlay alone won't do alot, but getting some stuff like dynapad (what he recommended) would be better. Any input?
That stuff cost about $100 for 12 sq ft. Thats more than I wanted to pay.

I have been using the underlay for noise abatement for more then 20 years and it has always made a big diff. in any car I have installed it in, maybe the guy is not talking about the same stuff as there are other carpet underlays.
Dynapad, [by Dynamat] is a very good product, and does an excellent job.
The underlay, sometimes called "sound proofing felt" is made of mostly jute and shredded scrap cloth all bonded together into a pad about 3/8" thick, some brands have a latex backing, [I have used both] you will recognize it when you see it, it is a light brown in overall color but you can see bites of shredded cloth/treads of just about any color in it, there is no foam, plastic or rubber in it, [other then the latex backing] unless you get the type with the backing.
There are other things that can also be done to cut road noise that do not require brand name dampening materials.

Thats the stuff he had! He had tons of the underlay laying around but he said it wouldn't do a whole lot.
Maybe i'll just give it a shot with the underlay.
How big of a difference are we talking sound wise?
Would you recommend the dynapad? If its really great stuff maybe I can splurge on it.
Thanks for answering all this stuff btw, it means alot.

The Dynapad is very good stuff, but 12sqft is not going to cover your cars floor pan.
The underlay along with some spray cans of "rubberized undercoat" installed/applied properly will make a big diff., like day and night.
step it up a notch by adding some sections of "Peal & Seal" will make an even bigger differance.

Don't use fatmat. You HAVE to use a heatgun with this stuff, and even then the adhesive isn't great. The stuff is pretty thin too.
Trust me, I used this stuff on my del sol and on a buddy's car.

I'm loving this idea. How much weight will it ALL add in the end btw?
