i rebuilt my engine.
put the head on. cam shafts, cam caps ect.
set the crank to TDC. loosen tensioner. set both cam gears so the aarows are pointing up.
i set the belt on the exhaust cam first.
double checked the aarows on both gears, then put the belt up on the intake gear.
tighten the tensionher.
is there supposed to be play on the belt still? when i press the belt down between the gears, it goes down about 1/2"
im scared to put the rest of the car together because i think it skipped a tooth..
i tried for 4 hours and had the same result..
how can i resolve this? thanks

You need to rotate the crank to set the tension.

You need to rotate the crank to set the tension.
Rotate the crank counter clockwise until you move the cams about 3 teeth. Then tighten the tensioner. If it is still lose you can get a long screw driver and push on the tensioner to tension the belt. Dont do it too tight though.
Mine is actually too tight right now and i am getting a whining noise coming from the belt.

Are you sure you did the timing belt right? When the cams are at tdc, the mark on the crank pulley should actually be a little before the marking on the lower timing belt cover.
The reason this happens is because the belt gets the slack pulled out of it before it starts to move the cams.

i didnt know that about the crank being a lil before the mark on the cover.
the manual said make sure the white mark is matching with the mark on the cover so its at TDC.
I line up the tdc marks on the cams with the aarons pointing up and the groves on the gears pointing towards each other.
i was able to drive it out to the shop this morning. hope to get it back soon. lol

Yes when you first line it all up, everything should be spot on. THe cams should line up perfect and the crank should line up exactly with the timing belt cover.
But when you go to tension the belt and move the crank counter clockwise, the slack gets pulled out making the crank turn a little bit before the cams begin to turn resulting in the pulley marking being a bit ahead of the mark on the timing belt cover.
