FAQ "trans fd Id" procedure verification
Alright guys, I searched and found the trans Id procedure found in Tyson's FAQ and have a quick question. The trans is on the bench and I'm just wondering how can I be sure the tranny is in 1st gear for the test? My guess is that it's the "first click out" from "all the way in", but often my guesses are WAY off. Thanks for a verification......

stick a screwdriver in the hole, orient the trnany like its in the engine bay. then push left and pull. thats first.
if it was in any other gear, the rotations wouldnt even match anyway.

well, for your info guys, the "count the revolutions" method did not work out too good for me, but I did in fact confirm that my tranny was an si by counting the 68 teeth on the fd gear....Now if I could just confirm (somehow, after buttoning up the case) if it is indeed a usdm or zc trans.....After reading a couple threads here on H-T, I have a few questions.......Do the zc 4.25's use different driveshafts? Am I corrrect in ASSUMING that if the usdm driveshaft fits in the tranny that it is a usdm si? Thanks for more tranny id info........
if its a JDM ZC with the 4.25 FD, itll have same Si axle sizes. actaully, itll be identical to Si trans.
if its a "gold" label L3- tranny, and its not from a DOHC (larger axles), you have nothing to worry about it not being any different than an Si.

Thanks Tyson...
"Identical" except the 2-5 gearing is different in the zc tranny, is that correct? Is there a way to confirm which 2-5 gears I have without opening the tranny again? I will sharpen my pencil and put some new batteries in my calculator.....automotive formulas own me.
Trying to confirm this, because I believe that NASA H4 allows only usdm gearing...
Thanks Again........

ONLY DOHC ZC trannies have the different 2-5 gears, and you can tell those by the big axle. the 4.25 SOHC ZC are identical in ALL respects.
My "gear ratios for l3 transmissions" chart doesn't stipulate DOHC....It also shows a zc with a 3.88fd as well...It has only numbers, not any REAL info, ha ha......thanks again
