Timing camshafts to TDC
I'm having a hell of a time timing my h23 after a timing belt/headgasket replacement. What is annoying my is the tick marks on the cam gears, so i got some questions.
Are the exhaust and intake cam Gears different or the same?and also just to triple check how can i tell the diff. between exhaust and intake cams to be 100% i didnt dick up putting them back in.
I know to put the cams at tdc is to have the UP arrows up and the tick marks on the gears on the inside and even with eachother.
The tick marks are supposed to the parrellel with the head correct? Its a pain in the *** to see if they actually are with the fender in the way.
Is there an easier way to see that they are in the correct position?
Thanks for the help!

You want the up arrows to be pointing up and the lines on the sides to be pointing right at eachother...they will be relatively parallel to the head, but if you try to get it exact you will just give yourself a headache. Anyhow, the arrows need to be up and matching while the TDC mark on the flywheel (white plus sign) is lined up with the marker on the engine block.
You are using the flywheel to do timing right?

the PLUS mark.......?
Well I'll go do that.., shoot I've been puttin it on the white - mark, the plus mark is also white, what the hell, lol.
Thanks!

Sounds like you're at the same place I was one time, haha. I could NOT get it running right until I took a break and saw that I wasn't using the plus sign.

What about the crank gear. there are TDC marks on them too.
I line the crank gear up first and check the TDC marks on the fly wheel as a back up.
Not all Hondas have the TDC marks on the flywheels. I did a SOHC accord the other day and there was no service hole for the flywheel on it.

Yeah, you need to be either setting the crank off of the crank gear and the mark on the oil pump, or finding #1 tdc through the plug hole. I would only trust the crank gear method personally, since you should have that stuff all apart anyways!

stick a punch through the service hole in the cam cap bridges and into the hole in the camshafts. stop [freak]ing with those stupids cam gear marks. as far as knowing which cam is which, the exhaust cam has the notch on the end for the distributor.
