EGR valve cleaning
After having my CEL come on again for the second time on a really cold day, i finally pulled the code to see what it was since the car sounded like it was running kind of rough (first time, i got to where i was going and turned off the car, but the CEL was off when i turned it back on). anywho, it was a code 12, EGR, and now im looking into the cleaning procedures and had a question about the gasket im guessing goes under the plate/cover you remove.....is it a specific gasket you get at a dealership or is it something like the silicone gasket you use on water pumps?
I'm not sure what your asking... both the water pump and egr plate gasket are specific gaskets. Not sure if you can find it at other parts stores but I'm sure you can at the dealer.
actually, that kind of answered it. and i had a 240sx as my last car, the water pump wasnt driven by the timing chain, but by a belt, so the pump just fit on the front of the engine and used blue silicone as a gasket, same as the thermostat housing. anywho, so its an actual part? alrighty, i guess i'll place a call to the local dealership and pick one up before i start this project.

It is part number 17 in the above image. It is a metal plate covered in a gasket type material. It seems like it is actually part of the EGR plenum. To play it safe you could buy one. I have cleaned and reused my original gasket twice with no problems. Scrub it clean using throttle body cleaner and a soft bristle toothbrush. As long as the black gasket type material is intact with no scratches it's good to reuse.

Bringing up a semi-old thread....I finally go around to cleaning the EGR ports on the car....good grief...they were clogged solid and the cover was just as bad. So, after lots of cleaner and picking and scooping...they're clear and free. unfortunately i wasnt able to reuse the old gasket due to its not so great condition, but i was able to get one ordered. the beast should be back on the road tomorrow. all-in-all, this wasnt too hard of a job, the only major problems were some of the vaccuum tubes being in the way and having to remove them to get to the ports. we'll see how the car drives tomorrow once i get it back together. thanks to all those who posted up responses.
