195/50/15 on a 97 Civic - do you ride on them?
I know the answers to the question, but I like you opinions on 195/50/15 on a 97 Civic. I've used (using) all these sizes in the past:
185/65/14 (stock)
195/50/15
195/55/15
205/50/15 (current)
I'm thinking of trying 195/50/15 next time again because it's cheaper, seems like it offered a quicker response - cause the tire is shorter, and smaller for less chance of tire rub.
I'm concern about the 195/50s slowing my top speed, decreasing my MPG, ride too stiff, and making the car even lower. Yes, I had that size, but don't remember all the details cause it was two sets ago. Car lowered by 1.75F/1.5R.
My current 205s do rub at times cause it's a bit wide, other than that - perfect. The 195/55s are nice offer grip, but felt slow cause it's taller, like stock. The 195/50s was loud (maybe it's the brand), ride stiffer, but was quick in any gear, like I actually got more ***** in the motor.
Price of 195/55s are almost 60% more than 195/50s
Your comments?
Thanks

i had 195/55/15s on my integra and went to the same one you are considering. I so no descernable difference in my top speed (really, so you need to go 100+?) at about 70-80 mph it might be off by like 2-3 mph, no big deal since your normal speedometer is off as well. Stop by a cop, ask them to gun you and drive by at certain speeds 35, 45, and 55 so you can get a reading. Then you can know for sure how much it may be off. I personally went with that sizxe because of price and stiffer sidewalls (for autocrossing)
What are you so concerned with top speed for? How often do you top your car out? Despite the 195/50 tire providing quicker response, the 205 still provides better overall grip.
I also have read some things lately that say 195/50's are dangerous to ride b/c of weight issues.

Let me change the question when I say "top speed." I meant making the engine work harder (spin more) to maintain a high speed because the shorter tires is like a shorter gear.
Please explain.

I had some Cooper Cobras in 195/50/15. The ride was worse then my current 205/50s, but initial turn in felt quicker. I also have some very slight rubbing issues now. 195s are perfectly cool.
