Need help in choosing subwoofers
Ok well i sold my pos kenwood amp and acquired a hifonics bxi 1600rms mono amp but im having trouble selecting subs for it. I just dont feel comfortable running my infinity kappas with this amp and am looking for something with more low end ummph than the kappas.
My thoughts have been between the 12inch alpine type r's, the L7 12, and maybe three of the hifonics brutus subs. I realize the amp is a bit much for the type r's and the solobarics sq isnt going to be what im used to but im also trying to keep the budget fairly cheap. Thanks for any imput given. Also i mainly listen to bass heavy music like hip hop techno hard rock etc.

again 12w6 are very pricey and the w3 will not handle the power the amp will throw at them even with them wired at 4ohms I dont feel comfortable overpowering an expensive sub combo. But thanks for the imput ill will keep that in mind if i find some extra cash laying around.
Although it is hard to find any info on the Hifonics Brutus BXi1600D, it not on their site, it is much like the BXi1601D, 1605D and 1606D 1x1600W RMS into 1 ohm, 1000W RMS into 2 ohms and 500W RMS into 4 ohms, all of which I take with a grain of salt as they do not tell you at what voltage that's at, at what frequencies, or what the THD is.
However, as it is better to run the higher impedance's, [4 ohms] for SQ, you probably have close to 1x400W RMS into 4 ohms, 1x700W into 2 ohms so it should drive a single or a pair of JL Audio 12W3v2-D2... http://mobile.jlaudio.com/prod...id=12 VCs wired in series or wired series/parallel, (1) 4 ohm load 300W continuous (2) 2 ohm load 600W continuous.

Im looking to spend under 400 dollars for the subs and was honestly trying to avoid jl due to price and previous experiences. Im mainly trying to decide between the subs i listed or some with similar specs unless for some reason im misuderstanding something but these subs i listed with my amp should be able to outperform the jlw3 suggested? This isnt my first system by any means but i was looking for some imput from people who have experience with any of those subs or any other higher level sub. I have also considered the pioneer premier if any one has any insight on that it would be helpful. Sorry for being long winded and a pain i just want to be happy the first time and not have to re buy different subs.

Then I would look at the JL Audio 12W3v3-D2, IMO they will outperform your choices, of the 4 you list, the Infinity Kappas are OK, Kappa Perfects would be better, out of the Alpine Type R, Kicker L7 and the Hifonics subs, I would pick the Alpines for SQ, the Kicker for "more low end ummph" and I am no fan of Hifonics subs, or any of their products for that matter, the SQ sux, however if all your looking for is that low end "ummph" then I would guess three 12" Hifonics will push more air then the L7, [or any of the others] but a 12" L7 in a proper box would give them a run for the money and would definitely have better SQ.

I cant afford a w7 though if i could then I would consider it but its just unfortunately not in the budget. Im kinda leaning toward 2 12inch L7 solobarics.
Even if you could afford the W7, you would need another amp, the 12W7 is a 3 ohm 1000W sub, your amp will make about 750W RMS into 3 ohms.

now now lol we all dont need to push everything to its limits. I know but the w7 isnt in my arsenal anytime soon not to mention im not looking for sq im looking more for spl with bearable sq. and my amp will make about 1500 watts into a 1ohm load and that should massage 2 l7s nicely.
If you are looking for a awesome sub at a real cheap price, you need to check out the new Cerwin-Vega V-MAX subs. The 10s,12s,and 15s all handle 600w rms each and will run you about anywhere 280 pair for 10s, 360 pair for 12s and 420 pair for 15s. And the also work really well in a small ported box. You can get the plans off of their web-site

Actually i found a sweet deal on MA audio 1200xl if any one knows anything about these subs? I can get 2 for less than the price of one l7. http://www.onlinecarstereo.com...14700
thats a link to the specs but not the price im paying lol i can get them from a friend if i decide on them.

in my opinion i wouldnt trusta a square designed sub simply du to the fact there is too much stress on the 90's at each corner. if i was to recommend a sub it would have to be the mtx super woofer series either the 7 or 8 series. the 9's are too expensive but the 7500 u can buy 2 off ebay for like 200 even the 8500 i think
l5 or l7 the square designed sub are great. kicker got them down and they work great .. the point in a square sub is that it could moved more air space within a 8, 10, 12 or 15 sub . a single square 12 will be loud then any other round subs out there. the more air space moved the more boom you get. kicker had alot of problem with them in the past. but they have fixed all the problem with the square subs. if you dont beleive me just drew a 12 inch round circle and then drew a 12 inch square whice will have more cone space? rms to rms 12 vs 12 l5 or l7 speaker box all in spec of both subs, square will beat the loudest hands down
Thanks for all the imput fellas. I have decided on a 12inch Fi Q subwoofer in a custom box built to Fi spec and to forget the hifonics and go with either the mtx 81001, re 35.1 or the us amps md2d.

LOL, although a 12" square speaker has more cone area then a round 12" speaker, it is not only that that makes it "louder" and on top of that a Kicker 12" L7 is not really a 12" speaker, now is it?
There are many factors that make one speaker louder then another, starting with power handling, speaker efficency, and other T/S parameters, the biggest factor of coarse is the box the speaker is in.
Now if you want to compare apples to apples, the JL Audio 13W7 has about the same cone area, same power handling, and although it is less efficient, [86.3dB] then the Kicker S12L7, [88.6dB], both subs in there optimum SPL box driven by the same model amp, say a JL Audio 1000/1, I would put my money on the W7 and it would sound better.
MTX has a couple of 12" models that would easily spank the S12L7, so don't believe all the hype you read on a manufactures site about their product.

94</TD></TR></TABLE> the w7 have the sloopest bass ever . and how are you goin to compare a top of the line sub with a 2nd to the top sub? lets compare the 13.5 whice is really only a 10's sub the surround is about 1.5 inch thick all around ... lets see that speaker go up to a 12 solo X 2500 watt rms 5000 watt max at {87.7 db} and also kicker sale recones for the subs for about 200 bucks and you can recone it yourself, now on the other hand wat happend when ur w7 takes a ****? send it back to jl and have them recone it for about 500 with shipping when the speaker retail for 1100? .... power dont make you speaker louder, more cone space is wat makes it louder ... lets see you try and put a 1000 watt amp to an 8 inch sub? is it going to be louder just cause you have a 1000 watts goin to it? no its not its just goin to be as louder as if you put max watt to it ... yes i know the biggest factor is the box. i know most people dont like kicker ... i was one a non beliver of the square subs ... i been a kicker/rockfish fan snice day one. but rockfish is no longer the same company it was back in the 80's and 90's .... but yet kicker is still the same company it been snice day 1 ... y is that may be its because they make a great product. i know kicker lost alot of customer when they introduced the square subs, yes the square subs was shitty at first, but in the past few years the sub has gotten better ... i had 2 12's l5 in a 6 cube ft vented box tuned at 45 hz. running an arc audio cxl 2500 to them they we're only running alil under rms from wat the spec of the amp stated but im sure that the amp is way under rated on its power ... i hit 148 db with 2 12 l5 with about 1100 watts goin to them ... 1 stock honda battery and 1 red top in the back. just my 2 cents .... read about kicker new 10000 watt amp called the Warhorse : http://www.kicker.com/06/kicker_home.html , lets see jl try and build something like that.
