I don't like it.....i love it! Probably the best decision i could have ever made besides getting married
. I'm 24, a homeowner averaging a lot of money in my bank. I actually can afford to build my turbo hondas and I own a Acura Tl-s and soon to be RDX, and a boosted honda. That's materialistic things, which a re a benefit but more than anything I love coming to work. I have a great crew and work in a nice part of the city. the time off is awesome. retirement is amazing

Man OP, have you made my day long.. I saw your post at about 10:30 (am) and till now I have done nothing but though about it. Thought about how this opportunity would steer my life into a whole new direction if I did it. Thought about how I would approach my parents about this. The only real problem that is holding me back is that I am from Cali and moving to Austin would be quite a step for me right now. I know for a fact that I will eventually move out of here for a number of reasons, but I don't know if it is the right time to do so now, mainly because I'm 19..
I am very passionate about the career and I will do whatever it takes to get my foot in. I'm sure that you being in the field, you know all about the many difficulties and the competition one is faced with when trying to get in. Well its x10 here in california. I'm starting 4 FT classes on Monday, which I'm sicked about, but knowing that the average firefighter age here in california is 30 I have a lot of growing up to do. Plus I face the reality with open arms and understand that the FT I am taking at a local community college are, this semester, along with 5 more in the Fall, are at best getting me up one step on a mile high ladder. The academy in Austin seems to be the ideal way to become a cadet. Its so good of a deal its almost too real to be true considering the extensive school, application process and luck I have to have here in california to be remotely close to be one of the considered for a position.
When I saw your post and studied the website you linked, I was so excited I forgot to eat today.
This is just the opportunity I am looking for.
1 It will bring me much closer to my goal.
2 It will get me out of cali.
After intensively pondering about it for the whole day, I can't come up with any way that I can do it at this time in my life. Thanks for keeping me excited about the job and having me dream about this opportunity for a whole day.

mpower3 im kinda exactly where youre at.
im 19. and doing ft classes right now. just got my emt done. only advantage i got is that my big brother is a detective and hes really cool with the fire chief in the city he works for and he said as long as i get through the academy before the chief retires i pretty much got a job.
but i know how hard it is going through this program. its pretty expletiveing tough. very intense. every single one of the classes starts with like 50 students and has like 7-9 passing by term end.
what classes are you taking right now? and at what school? i can't wait to get my career rolling. gonna work as an emt this summer and finish my ft degree.
did you apply for oakland during their crazy application handouts?

Luuuucky. I wish I knew someone on the inside.. Even though I heard about the big oakland boom, no, I have not applied with them. Although right now, I'm kicking myself in the *** for not doing so. Have you? If so, have you heard from them? I'm kinda behind you on EMT though. How was it? Everyone in the class pass? How much did you have to pay for it?
As far as the Ft classes. I am taking them at American River College. The classes themselves are off-campus. These are my first classes towards the career. Out of high school I took the time to get all of my general ed done. Next week I will be starting FT 170 Fire Investigation, FT 300 Fire Protection Organization, FT 301 Fire Prevention Technology, and FT 301 Building Construction for Fire Protection. I am still on the wait list with FT 300 and FT 301. How are my chances of getting in? You mentioned a small percentage passing, does that mean the instructor takes more students that the class limit knowing he will have sufficient space at the end of semester?
How are you so sure you will be working through summer as an EMT? Do you have the position already lined up? I'm afraid summer alone isn't going to cut it. You need a full years experience as an EMT to get the FT degree. At least we do.. Or did you end up taking an internship with your school that gave you experience hours? What school are you doing it with?

Austin pays for you to get National registry certified, my class had people that moved from cali and we had someone from Canada. it's hard to get in but it's defiantly worth it. If you don't apply you don't have a chance.
Don't think the academy is a breeze. they will fire you. It's actually harder than any college course because your mentally and physically tired. It's Not givin to anyone it is earned and you have to earn your strips.

I drive by the Vegas academy every day. Looks are deceiving because it sure looks fun, but I know they are busting their *** out there.

chabot college is where i'm doing everything. were really big on it and its like top 3 hardest programs in the state i believe.
Oakland was a joke, and i'm glad that i didn't go to get an app, Ton's of people were lining up outside in the cold the night before and when they actually handed them out there was no order to it and only a handful of people got them. I haven't heard anyone that has been hired through that app handout though. A lot of people went just because you didnt have to be EMT certified to get on with the department. you just had to have it completed by the end of the hiring process.
Let me tell you EMT started with about 55 students, by midterms you have to have at least an 80% which is going to cut the class to about 15. and then you just gotta study your *** off to get pass the rest of it. at my school its health83(Emerg Med Tech - Ambulance), but we also have health81(Emergency Response) which is required to go into emt that should help you out if your school has it.
Our emt program is pretty good though it's like recognized by the national registry for something so that once you get through it you can just take the online nation reg test and youre certified.
my ft classes are on campus and theres actually an academy built into the program. and all the instructors are great.
I'm taking ft50- fire protection organization, ft51-fire services operations right now, and a one day class for patient stablization, extrication, and triage.
i couldn't tell you about chances of getting in. depends on the classroom capacity and how many people show up and how the instructor is themselves. some of mine would take anybody who shows up the first few days.
when you do emt, get a study partner, and study with them and go over all your crap. it will help a lot.
i'm not 100% sure i'll have a job as emt by summer but i've been looking at openings and theres seems to be a ton in my area. norcal, amr, royal, and theres like maybe 2 smaller private companies also. a buddy of mine got a job with norcal ambulance right out of our emt program and is working fulltime with them while finishing up his ft degree. also our school is required to get a certain amount of hours in of ride alongs, and we have some kind of partnership with the local departments and such.
are you working out? i've been going to the gym a lot once i got serious about this, work on your cardio and develop your core and back/shoulders.
i'm just pissed off i wasted a year when i went straight into college and i didn't know what the hell i wanted to do so i took bullshit classes and got bullshit grades in them.
op, this is tempting to apply, but i know even if i get called back for the oral board theres a long ways to go and im really not finanacially ready to make a move.
but do you think it would be easier to apply if you're already emt nationally certified, with experience, and also have passed the CPAT?
i'm still debating but i hate getting my hopes up.

my parents would probably loan me money for rent till i could get **** together.. lol hella forward wishful thinking. but i think i might apply.
