del Sol swap D16Z6 to D16A. Now sensor problems? wtf
Hey guys,
Just like the title says I had to replace my stock Z6 with a similar engine, that being a D16A. I bought it from jsamotors.com. ( http://jsamotors.com/catalog_p...d=733 ). That's the exact one I got. OK a bit on the steep side with price but moving on!
Swapped everything in myself. Read previously on HT the ECU would have no problems and it's pretty much a problem-free direct swap. Well that's not the case!
It's hard to put in words but I'll give it a shot anyway:
When accelerating on a warm engine, things are fine until about VTEC crossover. I originally thought it was the solenoid so I replaced the working one from the Z6. Wasn't the problem. VTEC engages fine, but right about 4000-5500 (and it varies) the tach needle starts to jump around yet the ignition is fine. I can feel no knocking, nothing. The speedo jumps slightly too. It's very random. But if I keep trying to accelerate while the tach jumps around, it jerks violently JUST like hitting rev limiter....but I'm barely into VTEC, lol. It's OBD-I and the check engine light strobes during the jerking. Too strange! While cruising in 5th, when the RPMs get up to that range again, sure enough I run into the same problem. So now my top speed is about 85-90ish because i'll have that jerking problem.
I talked to some ppl and thought it would be the knock sensor (apparently the A comes with one versus the Z6). They said no way, it might be the TDC sensor or the crank sensor. Hmmmm
The story is getting too long so I'll cut it here. If it makes sense, great! If not, I can post a video to try to help. Thanks for helpin me out though!
