Has anyone sucessfully stuffed 225/45/16s under a Civic hatch?

The reason why I ask is that I have a very nice set of 16" wheels that I want to use, but am having difficulty finding a good tire in 205/45/16.

Any suggestions on tires I could use on these rims?

 

225's will fit with rolled fenders and camber adjustments.

 

running Azenis 615 in 215/45/16

 

I guess I should have been a little more specific. I'm looking for track/autox only tires. Azenis don't cut it IMO.

 

I remember always have issues finding a decent 16inch tire. How tall of a tire do you plan on using?

Here is a picture of 225/45/15 on a 7" rim just to give you some idea.

I think you will be able to fit a 225/45/16 under your car with a little bit of work. Just bite the bullet and order them. Even if you have to roll fenders, raise the car, run spacers, or run more negative camber.

I will be running a 225 this year.

I ran 215/40x16" on my Civics before. But when I ran 215/45x16" I rubbed pretty bad on shaved Azenis.

The gearing on the 215/40x16" was pretty good, but at an autocross ran out of 2nd gear sometimes.

 

225 will fit ! might need to roll the rears tho dependingon how low the car is ! good luck ! post pics when u do it !

 

why you planing on running 16's? bigger brakes?

alot more 225mm options in 15" then 16", not to mention less expensive. especially if you are going with a dedicated track tire since the Azenis don't "cut it" as you said.

just looking on tire rack, only race tire in 225/45/16 is Yokohama A048, Toyo R888

in 225/50/15 , 225/45/15 you have
Hoosier A6, Hoosier R6, Kumho V710, BFG R1, Kumho V700, Michelin pilot sport cup, Toyo RA-1, Hankook Z214,
plus a 225/45/16 is about 2" larger diameter vs. a 225/45/15.

The main reason why I may be running the 16"s is because I already have them. They are 16 X 7 5Zigen FNO1R-Fs...11.7lbs/rim. Very nice wheels...just not a lot of options as far as tires go.

I'm kinda leaning toward using them as street wheels with some Bridgestone RE-01Rs, and finding some decent 15" wheels to use for track/autox duties. If I go to 15"s though, I'd really like them to be lighter and as strong as my 5Zigens...and forged 15"s aren't that cheap.

Ho hum...decisions, decisions.

 

A 225/45-16 will be fairly tall, and will adversely affect your gearing, regardless of it fits or not. It would probably be worth it to you to find a set of 15s for track use. 949 Racing makes a 15x8 6UL that's nice, light, and cheap.

The 949Racing 6UL wheels are really nice...love my set with 225/45-15 Nitto NT-01's. A 225/45-16 size is hugely tall for a Honda EG Hatch - it's right at 1" bigger in diameter than 225/45-15 sized tires!

 

if you are looking for some lightweight 15's to use with 225's, i can recommend the 949 Racing 6UL wheels.
i have them in 15x8. they are very light, and very well built.
i believe they have 15x7.5 , 15x7, and 15x9 coming out.

can't beat $149 for the 15x8, weighs less then any of the rotas you can order in 15x8.

i'm looking at their 15x9s and running the hoosier 275/35/15 on my EF for autocross. can't beat $180 for a 15x9 under 15 lbs.

 

^^^ good lawd! 275's?!?! and i thought the 255's on the hasport teg were big. how you gonna fit them? are you using a wider fender?

 

275s require pretty serious modification to the fenders, yes. That goes for any FWD Honda/Acura.

 

i'm going to cut along the top flat section of the fender, and weld in some sheet metal as a spacer. basically the fender will stick out about 1-2" farther then the door (JGTC like) . but it will require minimal reshaping and keep the stock arch.

if it ends up looking really stupid i will just make some arches. but i think it should turn out well.

Here is the rear of a friends EG i modified to clear 225's. Arches were welded on. the arches were not made from scratch, if you can figure out my method, you win a Werthers Original

Still needs to be painted. but most people don't recognize that it is any different from stock, and that the wheel opening is about 1" higher.

 

Huh...that's pretty neat. My random guess: cut the arch off a front fender?

Also, what offset are those wheels? My +35 6ULs (8" variety) didn't require any additional flaring.

Looks to me like the cut front fenders flipped then and welded them to the rear????

do you have any rubbing issues under hard cornering w/ the 225/50-15?

 

I didn't when I was running 225/50-15 710s, but my fenders were rolled (this was on 15x8 +35 wheels).

 

just cut the rear fenders and prep them. Rolling them will do more damage than good. Just don't let peeps lean on your rear fenders. slight roll on the fronts. you already know that you need some sustantial camber for R-comps so do it up.

I run 225/45/15 RA1s on rota slips 15x7.5 40 offset. Clears RTA perfectly (main concern for most). Cheap, clean, light setup.
