Default How's the ITR theft situation in Vancouver?

Hi everyone,

I've been browsing around Honda-Tech for quite some time but never took the time to actually register. I must say this is one of the best forums out on the internet for Honda related info. Anyways, recently I just finished high school and I'm looking at getting a car specifically a ITR. There are a few for sale here in Vancouver but before I make any moves in buying one, I'd like to know how the ITR theft situation is in this area. I've been reading ALOT about ITR thefts down in the states and this problem has me a little worried. Any info would be great.

Thanks,
Justin

from what I recall there has been several thefts in the vancouver area also. Its a widespread problem, and no one is safe.

Don't park in Surrey, Langley or South Burnaby (high crime areas) - esp. Metrotown and anywhere near Skytrain stations.

Don't park at movie theatres (asking for trouble).

Don't park on the street overnight.

Don't park in driveways overnight.

If you don't have a secure garage - forget about it - you will never be able to sleep.

Most thieves in Vancouver are smash and grab (just ask Ddub! )

There are soooo many nicer cars in Vancouver than Type Rs. Just today I saw a Modena 360 convertible, an Aston Martin convertible, about 25 Porsche 996s, and an orange Lotus V8 TT.

Keep a low pro - and you will be ok. Don't bring your car to shows like Boom, don't cruise endlessly up and down Robson or Kingsway and DEFINITELY STAY THE HELL OUT OF RICHMOND.

the theft of itr's has gone down consierbly from when it was in its peak 2-3 years ago. i used to work at the local wrecking yard here (B&E auto supply) that bought all the itr's through icbc, and there used to be an average 1-2 itr's coming in every week. all of them stolen and recovery with nothing left on them. that place is a itr graveyard. i am always going down to the yard to check thing out and there arent really many itr's coming in now, at least not as frequent.

nowhere is safe, but its alittle safer now i think. just dont be an idiot about where you park

Nope.

Buy insurance.
Park wisely.

I don't think the theft situation is as bad in Vancouver as it is in the States. The situation isn't as bad as it was a few years back but that's no an excuse to let your guard down. I believe a month or so ago, someone from Vancouver drove his car to Silvercity Coquitlam without insurance and it got stolen. There are a few things you should do besides getting your usual anti-theft systems:

-avoid Silvercity parking lots, doesn't matter which location, imports that park there seem to have a tendency to dissapear

-avoid Metrotown underground parking

-don't park at the big, unmanned lots at the local colleges and universities (ie UBC B-lot)

Essentially it all boils down to smart parking. In addition to the above suggestions, do the usual that everyone suggests (park in a well lit area with lots of foot traffic etc).

Metrotown underground parking is actually ok. If u park it close enough to T&T supermarket's entrance. Since there are lots of ppl walking in and out. I did see quite some modified Honda/Acura parked there with no problem. Though u gotta avoid to park @ the parking under The Bay.

True yeah Silvercity's parking is pretty bad. I usually go there in my friend's beater.

Also beware of Parker Place's parking, especially after the mall hours or when the lot is quiet. One of my bro's friend's Integra got stolen there and when the RCMP got her car back, all body and interior parts are gone. It's an Integra GS lowered w/ some minor cosmetic stuff.

I will say just park close to mall or restaurant entrances etc.

Damn, I always thought the Silvercity parking lots were relatively safe because of all the people going in and out.

HaHaHa not really. Never think that place is safe even they got security guys patrolling the parking lot.

OT: I think the kid from Malcom in the Middle (Frankie Munz or something)owns the orange Lotus V8 TT

Back on topic... Like everyone said, avoid all the Movie theater p-lots and park near high pedestrian traffic areas whenever possible. I always try to park my car on big streets instead of in lots and walk the extra 2 minutes.

The fact remains, if they want the car, they will get it.... especially in Canada, were the law abiding population cannot carry weapons. At least in parts of the states, if a car jacker is going to confront you for your ride, he at least has to think about the possibility of his victim pulling out a gun.

You can protect your investment by getting yourself a good alarm (doesn’t have to be the absolute best), a club for the steering wheel, a auto lock, the LS door handle conversation, as well as, covering your windshield vin. You can also, install a hidden kill switch somewhere in the car. Its a big pain in the ***, believe me, I know... with all those fricken clubs, it takes me 10 minutes to park the car, however, if you want to drive a car which seems to attract punks, who want your seats, motor, tranny, rims, brakes or whatever else they can use, then that is what you have to go through.

However, very little will save your car, from a person who will stick a gun in your face and ask for the keys....

If thats the case, big cities like LA and NY must be pretty safe, huh?

I didnt mean its gospel, there are exceptions, I guess... I just think if I am a jacker, I would hate to think my victim is gonna cap my ***.
