So, my CRX all of a sudden stopped cranking. I put the key in the ignition and turned the key...all lights come on and everything electrical works except the engine isn't turning over. The battery is brand new so that shouldn't be it. I decide to jump it off with a battery starter anyway (the nice ones on wheels yada yada) I put it on "Engine Start" and then turn the key. This time I hear the starter hum every time I turn the key. It's not turning the engine over, just humming. What could be the problem? Bad starter I assume?

yeah.. working at a parts store, this problem seems to enjoy happening to people.. you know the little gear thing in the end of the starter that is supposed to jump out about an inch or so and catch the gears and turn the engine over? well it probably stopped popping out, and the humming you hear is the gear spinning without moving.

 

Have one person try to start the car, while another person taps the starter housing with the wooden handle of a hammer. That ought to jolt the starter shaft enough to get it to start the car. This is just to get you to the parts store to get your new starter.

 

yeah im thinking it's the solenoid.
but i don't know for sure.
