Alright, this may sound like an extremely stupid and abstract question, but...

Wheel theory tells us that a larger wheel, when spun at the same RPM as a smaller wheel, will travel farther per revolution. However, a smaller diameter wheel, because the center of rotation of the wheel is closer to the point of contact, therefore giving it better leverage.

Since cars rarelly hit their top speed while doing the quarter mile (unless you're really fast), I was wondering if anyone has tried using smaller wheels for more torque, at the expense of a lower RPM:MPH ratio. I believe you'd also go through gears faster if you did this...but I'm not sure.

I doubt you understood what I was trying to say...but can anyone take a crack at idea? I'd appreciate if you didn't flame me, but instead corrected me on anything I might have said incorrectly.

that s right in theory that you will accelerate faster with a smaller OD tire, but then the smaller you go the more likely you are to lose traction.

Also when reducing the tire height you make the contact patch smaller longitudally and wider laterally which is not optimal for drag racing.

so, like everything in racing, its a compromise. You balance the need for torque with the need for traction and get the best setup.

20x8x14 slicks are about the same as going from 4.25 FD to 4.82 FD, alot cheaper too!

 

Please explain. I'm stuck with a freakin RS tranny. I'd like to get a 4.82 FD.

stock tire size is 22.7-23.0" in diameter. By using a smaller tire (20") you gain better gearing.

What size tires should i put on my 14" rims? Strret tires or drag radials, no slick...would it be possible?

 

what are your goals and engine/tranny/car setup?

IMHO don't 1/2 ***, go slicks or streets.

I have an 92 Integra RS with intake and exhaust, did 15.4 @ 89-90mph with the original engine.

I'm currently building a B20Z with crower cams 404's , crane valve springs and retainers, cam gears. I also have a nitrous express kit @ 50-75 shot....but never tried it on the track tho. I still have the RS tranny btw...

My goal for now: 14's N/A and 13's on the bottle. Sounds right? What do u think?

well 14.85 NA on a stock SOHC, and 13.09 on the bottle on same motor.

Witht he motor you are building, you should runs 13's without the juice.

 

I hope i'd hit 13's without the juice. I would definatly need slicks.
What size of slick were you using btw? 14.8 n/a sohc is damn good.
