There are a few pros and cons to each of them. An auto is easier to drive daily, but you'll have more powertrain loss and less power potential (since the auto is generally weaker than a manual). The manual transmission will be a lot more resiliant and better suited to a higher-than-stock power output.

What are your goals and what are you planning to use the car for??

 

I put this poll out because my friend wanted to know why He has a 94 civic automatic that had 150,000 miles on it and the trany went on it, and i have a 93 civic manual and have 242,000 and "nock on wood" still running strong. just seeing what other people think.

 

this all depends on if you are counting the clutch, but i have NEVER had a manual tranny go bad on me.

after my first automatic(94 saab 900) that died due to tranny problems i vowed never to own another automatic again. then i got married and my wife used to drive an automatic(92 mitsubishi galant). 6 months after getting married that cars transmission died (coincidentally just after some guy totaled my civic in an accident, and while my wife was on vacation with the new fit).

 

manuals are way more fun to drive..but the clutch is a bitch if it goes out on you

do you know why the tranny went out? i hear launching with auto trannies can really kill them.

launching with auto tranny's...? how would you possibly do that with a stock automatic transmission, short of revving it in neutral and dropping it into drive...?

In Drive left foot on the brake pedal, right foot pressing a bit on the gas pedal. Lift left foot, slam right. AKA "rocket launch" auto trannys love it.

OP: proper maintenance and it doesnt matter. there was a 95 civic on here a while ago carfax certified with 939,000 miles. all original sohc vtec 5speed. a few clutch replacements and such. any car will last if you take car of it.

 

For small displacment motors manuals are purly dominant in the views of performance and reliablitly, but from my experiance larger displacment motors especially american v8's they go really good with a nice auto tranny (this may just be becuase till recently most manuals for V8's arnt the best shifting peicies of machinary). Our mud drag truck has a built turbo 350 tranny with only a stage 2 shift kit and that thing smashes ur little cheeks in the seat big time.

 

thats def the way to do it, get that torque converter spinnin. Its not very hard on them at all, atleast how I see it.

Automatic tranis are a pain in the butt. too many clutches... manual is funner nd last longer if you know how to drive.

 

all depends on the driver and their ability IMO

also how the car is driven.

 

I had a 99 SiR manual that had no 3rd gear synchros and several GSR manual's that ate 3rd,4th, and 5th gear for some unknown reason and one locked up on me once..
That said when i bought both cars they had been mistreated rather badly and so had the replacement trannies i had lying around..

In my opinion auto's suck and they go wrong partly because people drive them like idiots simply because they hate the fact its not a standard..Ive known guys select Low1 at over 100km/h just to slow down or to rev up to redline then drop into low1 with the e-brake on trying to do burnouts..all dumb things but alot of people do similar..

A manual just stands up the abuse alot better if you ask me..auto's are for mom's and grandma's..lmao but they can last if driven right..

it's really no so retarded. Honda slushboxes are KNOWN for going out at higher mileages.

There's just parts in a auto tranny that are designed to wear down because it's essential for a "long" life on the transmission. It's a generally accepted automitive fact that a manual transmission lasts longer than an automatic.

Auto = MORE WORKING PARTS (i.e more things to break and higher chances of breaking them)

Manual = LESS WORKING PARTS (i.e. Less things to break and lower chances of breaking them)
