Default New owner with LOTS OF PIX

well ive been on this forum for quite awhile and my mother got me a automatic 1996 honda civic dx with 36K on the odo. She said a Cop owned it. I was originally going to get a miata but she got this for me as a surprise, but I AM THANKFUL for it still. So far the only thing i got are new battery, free straight pipe with OEM exhaust, and ebay steering wheel/hub/quick release. if came with a shift boot and shift ****. I tried to put in a e-brake handle because my cousin messed up the other one so he just put Electric tape all around it. I know how to drive stick but i have no intent on swapping it because my budget is pretty lowand my mom will be driving it once in awhile, so ill find another alternative to make auto fun. So far my plans are:

lowering springs(coilovers in the future)
exhaust
rims
alarm
intake
headers
...thats all i can think of for now.

I would like to keep in my straight pipe and get a new exhaust. What would i need to pass emmissions? A high flow cat? or am i better off taking the straight pipe out?

If you're going to get lowering springs, get a good shock/strut to match it.

Honestly, I wouldn't even waste time doing the usual I/H/E on your car...yours is a Non-VTEC SOHC, correct? If that's all you can afford (no offense), then yeah, go for it...but you won't see any REAL gains and are pretty much pissing your money away.

As for your emissions question, if you're in California then I don't even think a high-flow cat will pass. You'll have to get an OEM one.

IMO if its going to be auto forever and your mother is going to be driving it then just leave the engine as is. You live in CA and you will need to spend some money to find CARB approved parts (intake, header). As for the exhaust I would search ebay for a Magnaflow cat and then take it to a muffler shop to have it installed. Keep the diameter of the pipe to like 2inches if that. Yes, I would put an alarm on it and I would maybe find some Eibach or Tein S-techs and give it a subtle drop without compromising the ride quality.

In my opinion, you're not really going to have much fun at all without at least a B engine and a manual tranny, and your mom will probably hate the lowering springs. Also, as already pointed out, any bolt-ons on the stock engine are a ginormous waste of money for the 3 horsepower you'll gain. However, if you get some more money, there are some incredible things you can do to a hatch.

You won't pass, take off straight pipe.. and you don't need high flow cat either..

just put stock back on

yeah it does suck without being stick and not enough power, but since its my first car itll do just for now. especially with the gas prices raising up. and as for the straight pipe, i dont know what he did to the old one. so what can i do to fix this?

Looks like every other honda hatch every 17 yr old in highschool drives.
Word of advice... No straight pipes, sounds like *** and cops will love to harass you. Save your money and get a good name Catback system. Oh, and hatches are hot jailbait *** for theives, so kill switches galore, and invest in a good alarm. Honda theft, it seems, has been thru the roof lately.

i love your car, I would lower it with a good suspension setup and get a real nice set of wheels and it would be a great daily driver even if it is auto

that is a clean ek! congrats. my suggestion is to stay away from rice. the mods to put on that car to make it more fun is performance tires and good brakes. even with little power and the auto tranny those two mods will let you auto cross and also make spiritted driving more fun and safe. good luck

No stock automatic DX hatch, in the history of ever, has needed upgraded brakes. 90whp doenst get you fast enough. OE replacments of brake parts are sufficient for a stock hatch.

Nice car man, congrats. but do stay from the engine mods. but do begin with suspension mods that what i did. I got myself some Koni Yellows with H&R Sport springs and all i can say is the adjustability on them is just amazing. If you dont waht to spend that much on shock then i recommend some Tokico Illuminas or KYB AGX's casue they are cheaper and as for how low you wana go they its up to you if you want coilovers or springs. i recommend springs(personal choice) but its up to you. One thing i do recomend it to read and get knowligable(spelled wrong jeje) about you car first and have a goal of what you wana do cause you do not want to end up saying to yourself later...F*&K why did i do that... Good luck

ummm, drive a car that actually has really good brakes and maybe you'll know. unless all you do is street race, in which case you don't even need brakes. and 90 whp doesn't get you fast enough for what? if you know how to drive and have the right equipment (good tires/brakes/suspension) you can have a ton of fun with 90whp. plus better brakes could potentially save ur life, or atleast be the difference between rear-ending someone or slaming into a deer.

Ive never called a socal driver shitty, nor do i know how many deer cross the road in WV, but here in alabama, brakes have saved my car more than once from animals crossing the road. But maybe its not a problem in socal. Thats far from a random statement though
