You can't use an SH trans if your car is a Base. Easy way to tell is looking at the front of the trans, the serial number will say M2U4 for an SH trans and M2Y4 for a Base model.

yup, good idea...but it get worse gas milage due to shorter gears but its more agressive for accelaration

That all depends on which transmission you use

Ok well to break it down to you with correct informantion. A 5th USDM vs USDM 4th gen gear ratio. THE 5th gen has shorter gears NOT the 4th like you stated. So if SHE ( assuming from the SN) got a 4th gen Vtec trans the gears would be slightly Longer/Taller

lets say a 97 base prelude M2Y4 vs a 94 VTEC M2F4

M2Y4 - 3.285 - 1.956 - 1.344 - 1.034 - 0.812 - 4.266
M2F4 - 3.307 - 1.950 - 1.360 - 1.071 - 0.870 - 4.266

Actually, the higher the gear ratio the faster the acceleration and the lower the top speed for that gear. The 4th gen H22 will top out sooner, but will accelerate faster.

You can use any H22A transmission, other than the SH on a 5th gen base prelude.

Ahh I see I stand corrected the F4 has a slightly taller 2nd gear but thats it. So with the same 2.66 FD yes the Y4 with the 0.812 5th will top out after the 0.870 at the same rpm.

General rule of thumb the smaller the number the taller the gear also taking into accound the final driven gear also

ok, now im confused. i thought the 5th gen had a higher top speed because of its taller 5th gear. but you say it tops out the same
what is final drive?

I did type that confusing sorry. Yes the 5th gen will be at a higher speed when topped out at the same RPM

Final drive is pretty much the tooth count on the ring and pinion gear

the M2S4 will be longer geared ie: MPH will be higher at redline that with stock trans, and when cruising at highway speeds, rpms will be a little lower
