Tapping rod bolts to remove caps. how hard is too hard?
My first time inside the bottom end of a motor and just searched to find a good way to remove my stuck rod caps.
Now, im trying to be fairly gentle with things but do i really need to be? How hard can I "tap"on these bolts to give some motivation to these stuck caps.
using a small flathead screwdriver inside the groove on the end of the rod bolt, and tapping the head of the driver with a hammer.
any input would be greatly appreciated.

get your self a dead blow hammer or a rubber mallet and hit the rod bolt/studs. i assume these are stockers. if there aftermarket rods losen the bolts about half way and hit the heads. allternate hits between each bolt so you do not bind the dowls
will do, i'll also ask the techs at work what they suggest, tho most dont do block teardowns, they just order cores.
Okie dokes, Got em off. You can whack it pretty hard, all i did was either swing light or hold high on the hammer handle and i was able to deliver good solid jolts to break the seal.
Its really important to loosen the nuts on the rod bolts very small amounts then tap the bolt the push it down that little bit. loosening too much and then hitting will make the cap get crooked and bind on the bolts.
If you get stuck, just tighten the nut on the high side of the cap to push it back down the level and then start again. its a PITA, but its fairly easy once you get a rythm.
