Anyone swap out their motor for a d17?
Has anyone swapped out their k20a3 or a2 for a d17? Maybe some of you were looking for the extra fuel savings one would get from a d17.
Realistically, you would probably never gain the cost (time and money) of the swap, by gaining ~3 mpg. Fuel efficiency has a lot more to do with the car's mass/driver than the mentioned engines.
-If you say you could sell the a2 for $3000; I'd ask who is going to roll a Type S with 140 hp?
-If you say it's ideal for a base/ep owner, I'd tell that person, with that much time, to just get a job to pay the extra 25 miles per less we get per tank.
Are you looking to go k-series?

I wish there was an ep3 bodied civic offered in the U.S. with the d-series. The a3 seems to offer only slightly more power, for a significant drop in fuel economy.
I had considered possibly buying an ep3 with the a3 or one that had already been swapped to an a2, and then find a standard 7th gen civic owner, possibly one with an hx, and do an almost complete swap over, maybe with a little money from him of course.

I doubt anyone would do that because after the cost of swapping a k-series into a 7th gen, he may as well get an a2.
If I was you (or if I could do it over again), I'd look for an a2 swapped EP because the obvious gain minus the work but also mods (and even swaps) hold almost no resale value.
Bottom line: If the swap involves a k-series going into an originally non k-series chassis, it's going to be expensive.

It is true that the gas mileage on the K-motors isn't the greatest. Even the B-series outshines the K-series in this regards.
What you need is a European EP3 as they came stock with a D-series. Too bad we live in the US, lol.
I think your best bet is to pick up a 01-05 EX coupe and call it a day. You'll get close to 40MPG. My LX 4-door gets over 40 on the highway if I drive it correctly.
My RSX-S is lucky to get 27.
Maybe search for a cheap EP3 shell that's a theft recovery and try a D17 in there. But no one really steals the Ep3 because no one wants the K20a3.

Finding an ep3 shell is a good idea. The ex coupe is a great idea, but I would really love to have the versatility that the hatchback offers.
The subframes for both the ep3 and the coupe have the same mounting points correct? Also this subframe would be needed for the swap, I am assuming. I have never spent a significant amount of time under the hood of either car, will their be significant issues with the gear shift linkage?

What are you going to do about the hole in the dash?
Definitely issues with the shift linkage/exhaust/swaybar/electric/ecu/coolant hoses. Good luck finding mounts for this at all.
Also the d17 tranny is on the passenger side while the k20 is on the driver. This causes these bays to have pulleys and many components located on opposite sides: numerous sensors, battery, abs modulator, fuses, intake (mounts), a/c comp (lines), etc.
Again, I don't think it's worth it. Go a2 EP

Sounds like you need to start looking for a used Fit.

the cheapest "used" fit in the U.S. Still costs over $12K with tax and license...
unless he could find an owner in dire need to sell cheap!
FIT = JAZZ (in other markets) here's some info-
the U.S. gets the 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels. It's capable of 109 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and a five-speed automatic is optional. Sport models with the automatic transmission feature steering wheel-mounted paddles for sequential shift control. EPA fuel economy estimates for a manual-equipped Fit are 33 mpg city/38 mpg highway.

The fit does sound like the best option. Good thinking. I am curious as to why it would get worse EPA mileage though?

the k20a3 utilizes the same vtec-e as the d series. Only difference is the k20a3 has VTC, which is engaged at all rpm's. A d17 would not create enough power to move the heavy *** ep3. Nice thought but it just wouldn't work everything is setup differently. If you are truly lookin for a gas saver you'd have to do some research on all kinds of vehicles and not restrict yourself to just hondas if that is your goal.
I could get 35mpg in my EP if I really wanted too. Normally I would get 29-30mpg, but I revved it out all the time and drove it pretty hard. It would not be worth the $$ to swap in a D engine, you would be better off changing the gearing in the EP so that you are at a lower RPM, especially on the highway...

A K series getting 35mpg in a 2800lb car (with the Ep3 5-speed)? Good luck with that.

Seriously???? Why did you even buy an EP if you wanted to switch to a d17? The k20 doesn't get that bad of gas mileage, and its a strong motor and mods make it even more fun!!!
