I want to have this done correctly. Doesn't seem like the lack of a tq plate while machining would be as important with open deck as it would be with closed deck, correct?

If you look at bore distortion , most of it occurs near the top of the cylinders when clamping a head, or a TQ plate on. Where do the cylinders meet the block in a Honda design? At the base of the cylinders. Pretty far away from the point of contact between the head/TQ plate & the block. What is the most important portion of the cylinder in regards to making sure it is "true"? The top. It is my opinion a TQ plate is not necessary when doing an open deck Honda block.

There is another technique that seems to work well tho.

So really, the important parts to have assembled during the boring/honing are the main caps and girdle.

we have tested with and with out torque plate. you do not have to have one but the bore does come out a lot better with one. open and closed deck block is no different when it comes to the torque plate
