I bought a aluminum pulley off ebay and was planning on having the other pulley machined off to make it fit. I heard from a couple different people not to use it because it will cause rod knock. Has anybody ever encountered this problem?? Should I only machine the OEM pulley???

the problem that i encountered using the aluminum pulleys is oil pump failure. we then replaced the oil pump and within 5 mins the oil light came on again. in my experience they are oil pump killers! and H22 oil pumps are not cheap!!

i now only run the OEM pulley machined down to a single row and re-balanced.

I will add this I used a lightened crank pulley. Engine didn't last long. There is a reason even the full on drag H-deuces out there are using OEM crank pulleys

Any machine shop can lathe down your OEM crank pulley to make and alternator only.

and to the OP make sure to have it balanced after they cut it down to a single row.

 

my friend uses fliudampner here had to pound and cut the frame to make it fit
great insurance for the oil pump

 

Did you have the Aluminum pulley balanced as well?? I plan getting the the OEM pulley machined next week.

yes it was balanced. didn't make any difference.. still killed oil pumps... just get the oem one done and sell that aluminum one. and get it balanced! good luck!

i have used an unorthodox ultra-r pulley, it weighs around 12 oz or so. I have had it since 2002 without issues. Ran it for 4 years on one engine until I sold the engine, and it still runs super strong in a friends car. The second engine has had it on since 2006.

 

do you have your balance shafts removed or disconnected?

 

I have always had the balance shaft belt removed.
