Default Custom 2.5 down turn exhaust (help with resonator Q's)

I want to run a custom 2.5 exhaust on my project hatch which will be running soon. The header will be the tri-y w/2.5 collector. Since my dd will be my truck so noise is not that big of a factor. I want it to be simple so I will probably just down turn the exhaust just before the rear lca.

On to the questions. I know just running a straight pipe would be just too ridiculously loud since the car will be occasionally be driven on the street. So I am thinking of running the biggest resonator I can fit (22in I believe) to help with noise w/ no muffler. My question is will the resonator help with noise level or just kill the raspiness?

If you build the exhaust correctly you won't loose any power so I'd go with a muffler also in the rear. Dumping your exhaust under the car will make the cabin even louder. I don't know what the cops are like in your area but why go through the hassle? The resonator will help with sound but a cat would do more for the raspiness.

Cool. I was actually hopeing that you would chime in. The cops aren't too bad in our area but I also do not want my ears to bleed.

Didn't you at one point make a "race exhaust" that is similar to what I was referring to? What did that consist of and was it extremely loud?

Thanks for the help.

A straight through muffler would probably be worth the slightly decreased performance. I've heard a 2.5 22" magnaflow resonator plus muffler that didn't sound raspy at all, so you should be ok w/o a cat. I'd definitely do a muffler though. A 22in magnaflow resonator and a mild oval muffler would be good.

I am probably going to run the 2.5 piping with just the 22" resonator at first, then make a determination if it is too loud. It will be easy at that point to extend it and run a muffler. My dd is an '02 z71 so I won't have to listen to the car everyday either.

I've kind of wondered about how loud a turn down exhaust is that stops mid way under the car. I have seen the Comptech one that used to be made for integras but never got to hear it... Anyone know if these are unbearably loud for the street?

I just wanted to give an update because I finally got around to doing this (aka building my hatch from a pos bare shell takes time). The exhaust consists of the following; 2.5" diameter 1.5ft length of pipe to a magnaflow 22" resonator and finally to a downturn before the gas tank. The engine is a bone stock jdm b16, header is a tri-y

Honestly I couldn't be more happy with it for the price (about $150) in parts. The car is fairly quiet from the outside during normal driving, however during WOT it sounds like a streetbike. The exhaust sounds way quieter than a BC spec II and has absolutely no annoying raspiness or buzzing, it's actually quite deep.

In the cabin it is quite loud as SMSP stated it would be, but my eg is also completely gutted (no back seats, plastics, sound deadner, headliner, etc. so even dropping a bolt on the bare metal is loud LOL. Keep in mind that this is not my dd although it will get driven on the street quite regularly.

Pics up by the end of the week.

i built an exhaust like you were initially explaining but it exited under the tunnel after the shifter and it was loud inside the cabin. lol

thats the setup i run on my car. 17" vibrant resonator and approximately 3 feet of 3" straight pipe. in-car is pretty loud, but honestly from the outside its not all that loud.

heres a video from outside the car just pulling away normal.

My exhaust used to be a 2.5" with a glasspack and cat. It made the first turn to the side and then down so that it wouldnt build heat near the fuel and pushed most exhaust fumes past the side of the car.

Actually hearing your car made me feel better about how my exhaust would turn out. You probably don't remember but you were street tuning your new set-up and me and buddy were behind you for a while on hartsfield (teal eg). Needless to say your car sounded really good.

Are you still in Tallahassee?

I will before the weekend is over. Work is seriously kicking my *** right now and I won't have any time to even look at the car until this weekend.
