Default Ticking noise on #1 piston only when cold started.

My buddy's civic d15a7 is starting to tick on number 1 piston area. After the intial cold start it sounds like a V8 at idle. After it warms up its ticking noise is to a minimal. Then the whole thing happens again after cold starts. He checked valve lash within, it's spec. Anyone???

D15A7? What is that on? I've heard of a D15B7. But that came on 1992-1995 Civics. Regardless, unless you plan to swap to B-series or beyond, you can probably pick up a used longblock in better shape than what you have for a song (or nothing). This would certainly be MUCH more cost effective than tearing things down.
