Default Help! Type R Trouble

I bought a '91 CRX Si with a B18C in it from a guy. Drove it for 3 weeks and almost everyday something new went wrong with it - mostly little stuff that I could fix though.

I did an oil change myself on it right after I bought it (the oil was black).

Then one day the engine started to rattle. The rattle turned into a loud rhythmic tick on the freeway. I knew I was in trouble and decided to pull off. When I put in the clutch to downshift the motor died instantly. Luckily I was able to coast into a parking lot. When I tried to restart, it wouldn't turn - at all! I had it towed home where I got it to start but the tick sounded HORRIBLE, it had no guts at all anymore, and died after 5 minutes again. When it dies you can resart it after about 15 seconds.

Compression is about 150 psi in all cylinders (so not a dropped valve?). I drained out only about 2 quarts or so of oil. I didn't double gasket the oil filter and there were no oil spots where I had parked. The car had a pretty bad pan gasket leak when I bought it so I can't tell if the plug leaked, but it wasn't stripped and the gasket was still on it.

Please help me!

Check to see if the timing belt slipped a couple teeth

I bought my 88 with a B18C5 in it, and have slowly had problem after problem come up. I'm starting to get past all of it though, learning along the way.

Anyway, I had my timing belt slip when I put on a new flywheel. My timing belt was loose, and I was just trying to hand loosen the bolts, but it turned the motor over backwards, and the belt skipped some teeth. So check that.

If that's not it, check spark, I had a bad ignition coil, it won't throw a code. Make sure everything is properly grounded too! That is huge, and a very common problem on 17 year old ground wires.

Then check the injectors, fuel rail, and lines make sure there are no leaks or blockages.

Once you have compression, fuel, spark, and the valves opening and closing at the right time, it will run fo sho

Good luck

I also vote timing belt, and timing. I had a teg and the belt was off by one or two teeth and it idled like hell and was very noisy. Maybe check your valve clearances too?
