Default Hard to shift

Some of you may remember my thread...

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2182240

I just installed the shifter cables myself since DCH wouldn't do it. Before this, I was only able to go into 1, 3, 5th gear. No reverse, 2nd, 4th, or 6th. Everything was installed correctly, but it seems that every time I go into the lower gears, there seems to be some resistance. Do you think I messed up the syncro's, or the short shifter has to get used to it again?

Sounds to me like you broke the shifter linkage cable (I think that's what it's called). Others who did this had difficulty getting into all the lower gears (2/4/6 and reverse).

Edit- Just to add I beleive it's also somewhere around $130 to replace it. Sorry

Yeah, I have the short shifter, cable bushings still in the car. Plus my 460g weighted **** is on.

It can't be the shifter linkage cable, because that's what I just replaced, ha.

Is it possible you replaced it wrong? Or did Honda do it for you?

It sounds like it has to be the shifter linkage cable because the problem your describing is the exact result of a broken shifter linkage cable.

It comes with both cables attached to each other. I replaced it the same exact way as how it was before, except not being broken.

Would driving around for a week with only 1st, 3rd, 5th gear do damage to the transmission? Because that's what I had to do.

I don't think it would. I skip gears often, from 1-3 and whatnot. You don't need the other gears really, as long as you aren't driving around at 6k RPMs for 20 mins or whatever.

My shifting was like this in the beginning when I first placed the short shifter and bushings. Hopefully it just takes time for the car to adjust again.

get some one to look at you your traany shift linkeg to see if it is getting bound up on the batt wires ! this could be an issue if you have used a throttle body spacer along with a CAI. I dont know if you have done either but when I installed my injen CAI ,heatshield and thottle body spacer along with busshings and S/S I needed to remove a few things around the batt so I had clearance for the shift linkeg to swing. good luck

Skip Shifting Is Brutal on Synchronizers [emphasis mine]
Gear ratios in 6-speed manual trannies are spaced close together so you can keep the engine speed in its optimum range for max power and acceleration. Shifting to the next higher or lower gear in a close-ratio tranny causes small changes in engine speed.

Shifting a close-ratio tranny through its gears by the numbers puts a very small load on the synchronizers since they only have to make small changes to the speed of the mainshaft and the clutch disc.

Some drivers, though, like to skip shift so they don’t have to work the clutch pedal and shift lever as much. They like to accelerate in 1st gear, then pop it into 3rd gear, then into 5th or 6th. Skip shifting, though, is really brutal on synchronizers; [emphasis mine] it puts a higher demand on them than they were designed to take. Skip shifting can cause premature synchronizer wear that can cause the gears to grind when you shift up or down.

If you’ve got a vehicle in your shop for repeated damage to the synchronizers, go for a test-drive with your service customer to see if he or she is guilty of skip shifting. If that’s the case, remind him or her skip shifting can be an expensive habit to break.

Chris keep in mind this was your first stick car and you probably put alot of strain on the trans.

Honestly I'd remove the ****, the bushings, the short shifter and put it back to stock

its already cost you 130 out of pocket AND noted.... of this issue with honda service
if you start to have Trans/syncro issues
the bill will be SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive and I'd rather have a stock shifter than a 3k bill from honda.
