Default Have you ever started your car by turning your headlights on with the key NOT in the ignition ?

I heard a crackling nose coming from the fuses under the steering wheel when i turned my headlights on tonight and didnt really think anything of it since it was at night and wasnt gonna go anywhere. A friend calls to meet him somewhere right quick. Came back and i shut my car off to go inside but decided to pull it in the garage , so i go to turn my lights on before i crank it and my car is wanting to start from my headlights. The key wasnt even in the ignition. So i tried turning the car on with the lights off and when i go to start it like that the lights come on with the ignition.

The only thing I can think of is that my lights and or ignition are shorting together or something. I'd try to figure it out now but i figured i'd try and get a few opinions first and besides its raining and cold and dark out.

But ya Thanks in advance.

Wow, i've never heard of this before. If this is actually happening, then pop the ignition column and start looking for where those wires have become exposed and crossed.

BTW: I wouldn't recommend turning your lights on before cranking the car anyways. Might not matter in your case, but sometimes that can be the determining factor in whether a car will start or not if the battery is weak. But to the topic at hand, this obviously doesn't apply.

The very first thing you need to do is unhook your battery...please...

Then get under the dash and into the steering column to see whats up...

Do not keep starting it or turning anything on till you figure this out or

you could potentially ruin your entire in car wiring harness.

somthing like this happend to me once a while back, i went to leave and everything seemed right.. so i drove down the street got to teh stopsign where i was making a right turn.. and turned on my blinker and sat there for a second waiting for teh other car to pass.. and my car died... i was liek wtf?.. and looked down and my fuel gage was on emty .. so i was like .. um? no fuel? .... anyway long story short.. for sum reason when my light where on or my blinkers where there was no power to andything in the back of the car.. to this day i still dunno what it was but i was playing with fuses and relays trying to figure it out and somehow fixed it (i think it might have been the blinker realy shorting or sumthing cause it went back to normal after i removed the blinker relay and put it back in but like i said i still dont know what it was) i dont know if this will help you just thought i would share an experience

came out this morning and turned my lights on to see if it would do it and it was fine.

My windshield leaks a tad and im about to get it replaced but do you think it is possible that the wiring got wet and somehow made wires short and or cross ?
