hey guys correct me if i'm wrong but want he have to switch axles too.we tried to use a axle on a friends car and the shaft on the end that slides into the tranny(might have been the spindle side) was smaller.(my axle was 4 speed he's car is a dx with 5 speed)
a buddy of mine rebult it for me so i done know what he did she si one i got was messed up so he must have salveged gears out of the dx to fix the si one i got i have no clue lol but all i know it works like a dream
You do not need to swap axles; just use the ones that were for the car.
Yes, there are different axles but it's dependent on the car. The HF and STD trims have the smaller diameter spline on the hub-end. The transmission ends are the same though. Axles from a DX or Si trim will not work in a HF or STD trim car unless you swap the knuckles out for the DX or Si.
I ran a (Si diff)DOHC ZC transmission in my 88 Civic STD, and just used the stock axles. Worked fine. Once I swapped in EX knuckles I had to swap in axles from my old CRX DX.

You could. But it would be MUCH, MUCH, MUCH cheaper and easier to just get a used DX or SI transmission. I find these all day long at the local Pick-And-Pull. And they cost $80. Or $60 on Wednesday. Or $40 on a half price sale.

+1..i live in fresno too..i picked up my 5 speed DX at pick a part and I got it with the flywheel for like $96 all together. The only thing is if you go up to 89,90,91 civic you have to get a new clutch kit and flywheel the one from the 88 will not work. Other wise your fine.
