Default ECU "Reflashing/Chipping" questions....

Ok well it looks like im due for some schooling in the land of Reflashing/Chipping ECU's....im looking into gettin my ecu reflashed/chipped with Crome.

Well on the fact of not knowing "jack" about reflashing/chipping ECU's....I've got a couple of questions to ask of you guys on here....please try to keep it around 2nd grade for me...lol j/k

1. What is a "Base Map" or "Map"?

What i've come to understand it as is a set state of functions pre-loaded into a computer or chip/ecu or other source of memory to run the motor....hope im close.

2. Is it possible to store or save multiple "Maps - Base Maps"....maybe have one set for fuel economy/Daily Driving....and one set for Track use?

Once again something I've heard....hope im getting somewhere with this

3. Is it possible to change "Maps - Base Maps" on the go....say you pull over and can change to a different "Map - Base Map" with a laptop or another similar device?

this question is only valid if question 2 is true.

4. What are the Major Differences in Hondata and Crome?

Thinking adjustability....but once again im probably off....

Please keep in mind that my answers were only what I've come to understand and from me are in no way what I think are FACTS!!!!

I've been doing some reading on hondata's website....also been searching/reading Wikipedia on Reflashing/Chipping....been doing some searching/reading here on HT also.

Im just looking for a little guidance, and a cup of coffee because its gonna be a long nite(its about 7pm in iraq)....thanks for any help!

Ehhh

Base Map = a base map to start from, most of the time it'll get **** running but it'll run like crap start from this to tune it

Yes you can run multiple maps

Yes you can change them fairly quickly, car would have to be off and I'd imagine you'd need a laptop with you

Hondata and Crome are practically the same

The file is actually a .bin file that contains sets of parameters or functions that you copy/burn to an Eprom chip that run the PGMFI systems (fuel and fire) of the car. Pretty much what you said.

The term Base map is a slang term used to refer to a starting point/.bin file in tuning.

The word base map can be broken down.
1. Base = a starting point on witch to start tuning your car. Basic bin file in order to get the car running.
2. Map = On the Honda ECU there are two maps (look-up tables) that the ECU uses, Ignition and Fuel.
These "Maps" are what you adjust to change the amount of fuel and timing your car will see at a certain RPM and load condition. There are many more parameters that fall into the final outcome but I'm sure you'll read more about these as you start looking at tuning software.

Yes you can store multiple maps on a chip if you sue a 2timer. You are able to switch between the two without even shutting down the engine. Check out moates.net for more info on an available 2timer.

I use Crome and have never used hondata so I can't personally answer your last question as to what one is better. I have had no problems using Crome on my car. There is a lot of forum thread reading involved if you want to get right into the niddy gritty of Crome. It's probably not as user freindly as Hondata or the AEM EMS.

So I'm planning on getting this professionally done in nashville when i get back(iraq )....I really wanna get my hands dirty with it tho....so I'm hoping to help or at least watch the tuning process....but for a starter would CROME PRO be to much to handle?

Im guessing with having the abilities of CROME PRO there is alot of room for near catastrophic adjustment error with an all in all tuning noob at hand ....but im always willing to learn....but the K.I.S.S method (Keep It Simple Stupid) comes to mind in that maybe CROME BASIC would be the best bet for me.

The EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) is very common in the DSM world....on a corner of the ECU circuit board there is a socket where an EPROM chip is placed....is this common for OEM honda ECU's....or will they have to custom install a socket for the chip....the ECU im having programmed is a virgin P28....

been doin a little reading on http://www.tunewithcrome.com and just had some more questions.

If your going to get it professionally tuned I would look into getting some free version of the software that your tuner plans to use. That way you will know what he is talking about. There is free crome (basic) if you just want to play around. I wouldn't pay money for any software if you don't plan on tuning yourself.

If you've been to tune with crome then you shoul dtake a look at PGMFI.com is a good place to learn about tuning and the DIY software that is out there.

I was, still am, pretty much a tuning noob. 1 year ago I jumped in with both feet. chipped my own ECU and street tuned my car with crome pro so it's not that catastrophic..my car runs.....lol

Yes your sweet virgin P28 will have to be violated in order for it to be tuned. They will have to socket the ECU. I have chipped a few now, it is a fairly easy process. As long as you can solder, have patience and RTF-Di before you do it.

I miss the old acronyms. KISS is my way of life. keep it real over there eh! &
