D16Y8 VTEC?
Ok, so I recently found out that the motor in my car is not a D16Y7, it's a Y8. So I did some research and found that the Y8 is a SOHC VTEC engine, is this true? And if so, how can I be sure of it?

Yeah, it's kind of hard to keep my car clean during the winter in South Dakota.
BTW, thanks everyone.

Going N/A on a 1.6 liter just doesn't sound like a smart-feasible option for most people, so I'm leaving that out of the list.

I was thinking more along the lines of a smaller gain right now that doesn't cost much as opposed to a big gain that takes a lot of time, effort and of course money. I am planning on putting a turbo kit in later but that will probably be after college.
As of right now, I wanted to build the engine up step by step so it will be ready for a turbo. Possibly a new cam and cam gear, maybe replace the headers and exhaust since I don't know what brand they are and look pretty cheap, and somewhere in there I'll buy a new fuel rail with injectors and maybe an intake manifold.
What's the best part to upgrade now?

Has anyone heard of a D16Y8 stock in a 1997 Honda Civic CX hatch? I've checked all the engine and chassis codes and the trim details and there's nothing about a Y8 stock in a CX hatch. I checked the VIN on the engine and on the chassis and they match so I know it's not a swap. Anyone got any input on this?
There's a stamp you will find on the engine block next to the trans and the slave cylinder that will tell you if it is a Y7/8.
P2P is the ECU type.
Y7 has the upwards facing throttle body.

I know it's a Y8, I'm asking if anyone has ever heard of it coming stock in a CX hatch.

The VIN says it was manufactured in Canada but all the trim lists I've read don't have a Y8 offered in the CX hatch. My dad figured it could be a transition model that was offered in between regular models.

maybe whoever swap the motor swapped the VINs over?

The guy didn't swap it, as far as I know he didn't. I don't see why anyone would take the time to swap the VINs over though.

There was never a model like that (Y8 in a CX) release in the US. Im thinking maybe a mini-me and are you sure you checked the vin for the motor or for the trans?

I checked the VIN for the motor, it's right next to the D16Y8 stamp.

Sounds like it may be a minime swap if the block VIN tags match.
Y8 heads will bolt right up to a Y7 block for a cheap/easy horsepower gain and the addition of Vtec

Stupid question, but have you ever tried running a carfax on it?
CX's only came with the D16Y7, so that motor is not original.

Sorry for getting sidetracked on the other question.
Lemme start off by just telling you that you can pick 2 of these 3:
Cheap
Fast
Reliable
Fuel rail/injectors will give you no gains on a naturally aspirated motor, hold on off that untill you do infact turbo/supercharge the car.
Cam gears are also intended for turbo/nitrous cars, will give you 0 gains untill you are forced induction, don't buy it untill you turbo it.
A after market camshaft in my opinion is worthless unless you get your head worked on *Valve job, ported out, etc...* because your stock cam is already letting in a fair amount of air, and you need decent tuning to get the most out of a good camshaft.
CHEAP mods that give some small gains would be I/H/E, which it looks like you already have.
Personally I have a high-compression Mini-Me build with a D16Y8 head, but I have head work done, and it has been milled, but if I didn't have those things done, I would spend my money on maintenance if you haven't already (I had my head rebuilt new seals/gasket everything). A few dollars in simple tune-up/preventative maintenance will give you a faster and more reliable car, while spending money on after market parts will be risking reliability, and probably hurting your gas mileage without good tuning.
