Default brake/clutch pedals different distance from firewall?

I've been working on my son's 97 EX 5 speed, 4 cylinder, and thanks to forum just finished the timing belt & water pump replacement. Every time I drive the car, I'm bothered by how close the brake pedal is to the floor, particularly compared to the clutch pedal. It seems to be nearly 2 inches closer and, as a result the brakes (ABS) don't inspire much confidence. I haven't really wailed on them, but it just doesn't seem like there's enough travel to really bring maximum pressure to bear. I've had my local (non-Honda) mechanic look at the brakes. He says they're fine. The pads are stock and nearly new. Every other stick-shift car I've driven has had the brake and clutch pedals close to the same distance from the floor. Is the difference in our Accord typical?

Thanks.
