Default advance timing

today i decided to check my timing to see if its was off but no it wasnt it was where i left it the third line advanced. So then i decided to put it in the middle one. Drove around my car and did not feel a difference. So what i wanted to ask is that in order to have the timing advanced and feel the difference will you have to run higher octane gas all the time.
