Default lots of smoke on fresh build......................

well i started my motor and no issues, i went for a drive and it started smoking .....
my setup
98 gsr
9.0 JE 81mm pistons
je rings
scat rods
ls crank
new everything

garrett t3/t4 60 trim

it is smoking the most when driving slowly but still some on the freeway

it looks to be blue but is hard to tell, and when i say it is smoking it is smoking bad like it is hard to see through

so i pulled the plugs and the look great????
i did a compression test and as follows 150 160 165 155
so 1 and 4 are a little low but the plugs show no sign of oil

i dont have a leak down guage so i made a setup
putting 40psi into cyliners 2 and 3 there is almost no leak
but 1 and 4 there is some not a bunch but a small hiss

also the motor has a total of about 100 miles on it

my hope is it may be the turbo or the turbo oil return??

any insight you can give would be very helpfull

Check the charge pies and **** to see if you're getting oil in there.

valves?

try a leakdown test and see if you can trace where the air is going...

You can leak oil into the cylinder if your rings were put on upside down

i built it to the factory service manual spec as far as ring gap and bearing tolarences

as far as breakin that is what i was in the middle of

i started it up and checked for leaks, set timing and finished filling the coolant.

i let it get to operating temp and let it run another 15 min. i shut it down and let it cool off

i then started it back up and let it warm back up before going for a drive

on the drive is where i noticed the smoke

when i say smoke it is ALOT you can barley see through it. it smokes more with low load such as slowing for a corner or driving through city, i have not hit any boost yet so i am not sure about that

there you go.. found your problem.. its your rings. that you kinda did the break in a little wrong but probably not a problem.

if youre smoking just cruising along at low rpms then id definetly say the oil is leaking past the rings for one of many reasons. and you ruled out the turbo right?

Well, clearly a compression test is in order. It's newly built, but you should still get some acceptable numbers. From there I'd do a leakdown to approximate what the real problem is. Anytime I've seen that amount of smoke from a turbo car though...it's always the turbo blowin oil past the seals.

youre burning oil which causes smoke. how do you think the oil is getting burnt or where it is getting burnt? oil is entering the combustion chamber. yes spark plugs on in the combustion chamber. how long have you driven on those plugs you have pictured with it smoking? it will take a little while for it to show on the plugs.

you said there was no signs of oil on the exhaust side of the turbo? have you looked through the charge piping yet? or even the cold side inlet of the turbo? what size oil feed are you running? do you have pics of your oil return?

i know that the plug goes in to the compustion chamber.
i have put 80-100 miles on those plugs

yes i have checked both the hot and cold sideds of the turbo no oil on either side.

with this much smoke i would expect to have oil on the plugs

from actual hands on experience i had a buddy that had a blown turbo seal and it was pretty bad as far as the oil coming out of the blow off valve and also some residue on the compressor side of the turbo. i helped him take the turbo off and then we had it repaired. i think the theory on your rings leaking is probably right. the oil is burning on the pistons. good luck hope that helped
