Default what tranny to use...

Looking at a b20 for my 90 crx dx but it doesnt come with a tranny. Saw a b16 tranny on craigslist. Would this be good choice? Heard that I would have to change the 5th gear, is this true? Would a gsr tranny be better?

Yes you can use a b16 tranny and if you want you can swap the 5th depends what you are doing with the car.

i would get an ls tranny. cause with a b16 tranny at freeway speeds you will be reving the hell out of that b20 and thats bad for a b20. unless you drive slow on the freeway but if you cruise 80 like me its all bad. or get the b16 and change the gears like you said. but for dd id get the ls youll still feel the power.

But with a B20 you dont need the B16 tranny. For a DD I would use the LS tranny for DD. It has the torque to still move the car pretty well....plus you wont have to frankenstein a tranny, or pay somone to do it.

true true. I wouldnt even know where to start with the tranny. I'm still learning, I just heard that if I was to go with the b16 tranny that I would need to swap out the 5th gear for lower rpms cruising on the freeway. How the hell do you change out 5th anyway??

i dont know if your planning to go hydro tranny or not, but i have a b17 tranny, from the old gsr and the gears are really short and it would be a hell of alot better than an ls tranny, trust me i had one before the gsr tranny. plus you wouldnt have to do the hydro swap if you wernt planning on it. they are hard to find though. EDIT**its not so bad on the highway either, if i do about 70 to 80 im riding around 6-6500 rpm, cant really remember exactly i havnt been on the highway in a long time, or drivin my car haha. how much are you wanting to spend on a tranny?

I'd say no more than like $800. Its going to be pieced together as I find readily available and decently priced parts. 6-6500 rpms seems pretty high to be cruising at 70-80 mph. Is that normal?

I'd go with the gsr if your looking for a dd with a little more pep......If you were looking to race the car I think we all would be saying to go with the b16 but since your daily driving the car go with the gsr....the ls is gonna be a dog

Personally, I would just run an LS transmission. You can pick these up SERIOUSLY cheap. And the gearing is better for a B20. Seriously, that motor was NEVER designed to run at the kinds of RPMs that VTEC motors run at while cruising on the freeway. And the ITR transmission actually has the exact same ratios as a B16A transmission. Anyway, the REALLY nice thing about the B20 is that it actually has the torque to pull the gearing of an LS transmission without feeling weak (like an LS motor does).

what are you planning to do with the car? i built a b20vtec and that engine pulled with the b16 tranny it was a cable tranny and it was a ys1. it was sick and yes it was a race car and the tranny worked amazing but dont forget you have to put a race clutch!! to get that power to the ground! and good tires to hook!

Not quite on that one....6k @ 80mph??? Don't think so....

I have had the same trans but, with a Type R 4.78 final drive and I was 4800 rpm at 80mph.

You must have been at about 4k rpm @ 80mph with a 4.40 final drive.

DO the EFFING gsr or stop posting something that should be common sense, or at least make it interesting with a poll or something
