Am i able to tell what cams i have by taking the valve cover off? (im pretty sure my bro got some aftermarket cams)

If so, what precaution should i do while removing the valve cover.

 

When the valve cover is off, just make sure you dont get any dirt/dust/debris in the valvetrain assembly. Also, be mindful of the rubber gasket (VC gasket), its re-useable and should not be forgotten. What kind of cams do you think he put in it? could maybe find some pics that would clarify where any identifying info might be.

-the bolts that hold down the valve cover break EASY, so when putting the VC back on, do not overtighten them, be very sensitive with them.

 

negative mate. the valve cover gasket should always be replaced everytime you remove the VC. yeah you can probably get away with not replacing it but your chances are of developing a leav around the VC is pretty high. and its also a good idea to pick up some hondabond and ad it around the cam seals and corners for good measure.

Yea, if its dried out. Ive re-used a same VC gasket multiple times (picky with paint choices ) and have never ever had a problem in doing so, Nor have any of my friends. Only time it needs to be replaced is if it hasnt been done so in a long time.

 

No. It's impossible to tell what cams you have under the cover. The only real way to find out if you got aftermarket cams is to dyno and compare it to a basemap. You can reuse the valve cover gasket. Just be careful not to overstretch the gasket. Use RV sealant at the corners of the valve cover for a tight seal.

 

so there is no real way to tell if they are aftermarket. that sucks, my brother has a jdm gsr and is swapping in a ls tomorrow. why? i dont know

i know he got after cam gears but not sure about the camshaft. i was plan on taking some pics, but i guess there is no point, right?

Correct. You can not tell whether the cams are aftermarket just by popping the valve cover. The guys from Nagoya, Japan who I bought my b16b from said the motor was upgraded to aftermarket. It's been 2 years and I STILL dont know if they're aftermarket. I just know it pulls like ctr cams.
