06 RSX Trani grinds- dealer says normal.
Tranni grinds occassionally going into 3rd. 1-2 is a little notchy. I know this is all over the internet and the dealer says it's normal... Here's the question I have though...
The dealer says they recommend putting GM synchromesh in the car to solve the problem, but it's not an Acura-approved fluid, so it's not covered under warranty, but will not void the warranty.
Is it worth paying the dealer the extra money to have them do it for my warranty's sake? or should I just do it myself to save the extra $60 or so?
I have a feeling I'm gonna get F***ed either way because if there's further problems down the road they'll tell me there's a non-Acura aproved fluid in there, and if I do it myself, they'll tell me I didn't put the right amount in or some other BS.
OPINIONS PLEASE!!!

I can't say that a grinding tranny on a 06 car is normal unless you have been beating the **** out of it. And yeah, Honda is definitely getting a bad rap on their K trannys. It's the godamn syncros.
My advice is fight fight fight with them insisting that they fix it (I'm assuming it's still under warranty). My friend has a 02 type S that had a notchy 2nd gear syncro. He fought with Acura to the DEATH (back in 03) and the fixed it for him.
GL brother.

The car only has 13k miles on it.. they'd better damn well help me. they swear the GM synchromesh will resolve it... I have a bad feeling it's only going to mask the problem until the warranty expires though and I pay out of pocket then...

Yeah, do a search on that ^^^ topic and you will be certain that it will only mask the problem. I'm sure that they've had to fix a ton of those trannys and are willing to play a game with you to get out of it.
Acura's are unique, but dealerships are all the same (as if you didn't know).

if by normal they mean that most if not all RSXs do it yes... but if they mean normal in the true sense of the meaning then no. This is an ongoing problem with the RSX transmissions, in short... they suck.
Synchromesh will help its not just going to "mask" the sound, though the problem still exists and a little more care is required as an informed owner. Do a search on google, everyone seems to have the same problem, I dont know why, hondas engineers just failed in this design. If I remember correctly this is only a problem with the 6spds but I'm not certain of that... do a search on google.
Personally I would use the Royal Purple Synchromax... its better, but more expensive, you can change the fluid yourself and save a bit of doughm but underwarranty the dealer should be doing the service portion for free, check your local laws pertaining to warranty work, here in washington state they are required by law to take care warranty issues, if they dont blow the tranny and sue... then buy a better car...

In my experiences, with a tranny thats already having problems, syncromesh only hides the problem and adds no protection to it. There is other transmission fluid that can help fix the problem and hide it.. Redline etc.

I called another dealer that said it was all a bunch of BS that they'd try to do that.
They said about a yr ago, Acura released a newer fluid to help fix this problem... and it should be covered under my warranty. I canceled my appointment at the other dealer and booked one with these guys!
He said 9/10x it fixed the problem; the other 1/10 theres a tranni issue. Hopefully it doesn't fix the problem, and I get a new tranni, then the new fluid. There's already damage done...

3rd gear grind is an issue on most k-series manual transmissions.
It's all over the 06+ civic forum. The new Si's have the same issue as the RSXs
new formula acura/honda MTF helped some (I changed at 3k miles) I would only get a little grind when the car was cold. At 13k miles I changed over to Torco MTF and haven't had any issues since. Mine was never really "bad", I was trying to avoid more problems in the future.

same boat I'm in... not "bad" but does occassionally grind. If the fluid change doesn't do it. I'm going to demand a new transmission, and if the new fluid really does work, they can put it in then!
The more it grinds, the more damage is being done to the gear and gear sleeve. At least the 3-4 synchro set and 3rd gear aren't real expensive.
