Ya'll didn't want it, so...
I bought the damn F-250 my boss was selling, for a very good price. So I now have a tow vehicle, but no race car, and no time or money to get on a track... Oh well, one piece at a time.
Anything I should know about the care and feeding of a 6.9L Ford diesel (well, International, really)?

nah, the T444E looks like a much more modern engine, bigger (444ci=7.2L), and turbocharged. This one is just a normally aspirated 6.9L (421ci) V-8 circa 1987! For what I paid for it, it is quite fine!
It's weird to be shifting at 2000rpms...

ah yes...we have a Ford Super Duty from 1987 here at work with the diesel. On the back is a 1200 Amp Generator powered by a Volvo Penta TD six. With that load, it's a beast, but in a pickup, I'm sure it's more than adequate. What sorta final drive did you get?
Ah, the joys of a 3000rpm redline (or is it less...i forget).

You have a tow vehicle-I have none
I have race car :D
I have to use my moms truck. I feel like a highschool kid having to ask for my moms truck.
Probably get a blazer later this year.

the redline is actually at a whopping 3750rpm! I'm not sure it will reach it, but it's there. And I honestly have no clue what final drive it has... It will start in second with no problems and idle up a steep incline in first with no throttle, if that's any indication.
Ahhh, something I know very well......good choice
The T444E and the DIT Powerstroke engines are 7.3L turbo diesels built by International Truck and Engine Corporation. They share many of the same components with some differences in the turbo, waterpump, etc. "FORD did not build the Powerstroke!!!"
The pre-DIT engines are 6.9L IDI or IDIT engines. They are pretty good engines but the DIT versions are a vast improvement. But even yet the 6.0L Super Powerstroke engine will be here very soon.
**edit DIT (direct injection turbocharged), IDI (in-direct injection), IDIT (in-direct injection turbocharged)**

since you seem to know your diesel very well, anything I should know about their maintenance? I've been a 100% gasoline kinda guy until last week....
I just bought a new oil catch-pan that will hold the 10 qt (!) of oil that the thing contains, as well as a case of Castrol RX 10-50 oil. I also bought a oil presure gauge as the oil gauge in the truck reads pretty low, and once or twice dipped in the "too low" range, causing the check engine light to momentarily come on (at idle, a tap on the gas cleared things right up).
Any insights appreciated.
thanks.

Make sure to use oil only designed for diesels... Watch the fuel pump, and change fuel filter often... Water pump will go out sometime... Mine reaches redline no problem, just blows a lot of black smoke and just bogs when you get there, dno't be scared to do it either.. Tractors run at 2900 all day, no problem.. Good buy, If i didn't have mine, I would have bought it!
yeah, that Castrol is the only oil I saw in Pep Boyz that said anything about diesels... The fuel filter looks pretty new, but i do need to put back the water separator. The previous owner had removed it while trying to disgnose a fuel delivery problem... Sometimes (I haven't experienced it yet) if the front tank is kinda low, the truck takes a lot of cranking to get started. Like there is air in thefule line or something.
The clutch takes up really low, with the pedal barely off the floor. Looks like I may have to change it in the next few months... Maybe I'll do a clutch week and do both the GS-R and the truck.... Right!
thanks for the tips Corey, and congrats on a good weekend.
PS - you don't even wanna know what I paid for it.... IM me if you are curious.

Hi,
Bought a diesel a while ago. Here are some tips:
1) Change the oil often (2500 miles) - I use Rotella 15w40.
2) Change the fuel filter as scheduled - water is bad...
3) Subscribe to Thedieselpage.com - it is a wealth of information and well worth it.

Changing the fuel filter on proper intervals and emptying the water separator (if so equipped) on a regular basis is nessesary. Like it was said...diesels don't like water in their fuel.
The diesel page is a great site, I'm on there in one way of another quite a bit. Good info indeed.
