Default b20vtec base numbers? (no mods)

i have a b20b and plan on getting a b16 or grs head. completely stock block and head for now. what type of base numbers do you think this will net before mods and tuning. will it be compareable to usdm b18c1 numbers? i read the rules and i think this post is borderline acceptable so im aware that i might get flamed.lol is this question impossible to anwer based on the info i provided? i currently have a 94 dc with jdm b20b and gsr tranny. thanks guys. i just read the entire b20 non sleeved thread in the facts section. lots of great info but no answers to my question. i been searching everything b20 related for a few weeks now. once again. thanks and MERRY CHRISTMAS HONDA-TECH!!!!!!

I'll just assume you'd plan on using stock cams of some kind. No matter what, it won't be great. Stock B20B pistons have a really low CR, which means poopy for power. Guys that make power with LS/B20VTECs do so by using different pistons and non-OEM cams. I can't give you an estimate, but I can say it's worth waiting for some more money to do it right.

i totaly agree. i was just wondering what my starting point would be. i figured since all the power was in the head (b18c1), the larger 2.0 displacement using the same head should net you at least equal power as say a stock gsr or better. is my thinking off, or do pistons/rods and stroke play just as large a part?

Yeah, stroke, displacement, compression, everything plays a part. There is no one single part that's responsible for power. While the head will make a difference, the world's best head won't do squat for you if you have a POS bottom end. Don't assume that just because you're using a GSR head you'll make GSR power. You'll have a little more displacement, but a lot less compression, and won't be able to rev as high.

so pistons for compression, arp rod bolts to rev safely and more agressive cams/cam gears. are stock rods ok or are forged a neccesity? tuning with this setup should give me a fun little motor right? im not looking to max out the n/a hp on my block. i just want a fun motor.

Everything you said sounds fine. Some guys will suggest having the stock rods shotpeened or something. I have no idea how necessary that is. Tuning with that will be a fun motor for sure. I've driven an LS/VTEC car that put down ~185whp/135lb/ft and it was a ton of fun. Nothing too wild, but torquey and quick.

I think you would be satisfied with it. A loooong time ago a local shop did a del sol that had a stock block/head b20vtec with boltons. I forgot what he dynoed but I know he was running consistent 14.3's at the track. It doesn't sound like you want to break any records but rather have a fun streetcar.

i did one before with stock block, stock head and cams, put down about 170 whp with AC and everything factory still hooked up. fun to drive.

your best ideal setup would be b20 block w/ vtec head with RS or Sparks pistons. blox b cams and valvetrain. great setup and makes awesome power. and semi affordable.

if you can find some cheap Z pistons it will be worth the effort.
and don't forget to notch them

great info guys. i wasnt to sure if i wanted to go n/a. at first i wanted to trade the b20b for an ls so i could boost. i have an old t bird 60/63. turbo sitting here and i want to be fast. after LOTS of searching i figured it would be more fun/reliable to go n/a. b20turbo is a setup i cant afford to risk. like i said i dont want to be the fastest. just fast.
