Default Down, but not out. - Tranny Issue w/pics.

Back in October, actually it was the last trip to Newport for the final cruise in @ the Jug. On the way up I noticed a slight sound coming from my tranny. Explained it to a few different people, they said it was prolly a pilot bearing or a throwout bearing. I didn't think it was the case as they were both brand new with my new clutch. I thought maybe it was a bearing inside the tranny...as they all weren't replaced when I did the lsd.

Anyway...drove it up and back, and that evening went into town. By the time I hit Vienna the sound had worsened so I came home and parked it. A few weeks later, I got around to pulling the tranny and there the tranny has sat until last night.

Pulled it apart and look what I found..

What you are looking @ is the end of the counter shaft. The bottom of the shaft that has the teeth sheared off is the gear that directly contacts the final drive and differential.

A side view of the entire countershaft.

Top View

Couple more different angles

Here are 2 of the 3 missing teeth. I am gonna assume that the 3rd one went out w/the fluid. Those 2 were stuck to the tranny magnet on the casing.

Upon further inspection everything looks good. I got lucky that nothing else was seriously damaged.

I plan to replace the shaft, restack the gears and put it back together, good as new. I just need a b16a counter shaft...anyone know where I can get one?

Only the most top of the line..

1 off custom Mugen Spoon Quaife Obx.

Why does that even matter what lsd I used?

Yes Sir... I forget the clearnaces, but I went w/the oem standards.

(assuming I measured correctly)

if shimming was too tight, he'd ate the diff bearings rather quickly.

So..assuming the final drive/ring gear is fine...

Would it be ok to replace just the counter shaft?

assuming your like to drop the tranny again in the spring, go ahead and try it.

I wouldn't though, it was the ring gear that applied enough force to rip those teeth off, likely deformed them as well.

yeah, it can be measured for tooth offset/shift.

Figure $400-500 to do that for the ring gear alone.

Quit being cheap, replace the counter shaft AND ring gear.

$600 shipped or less get you a custom FD ratio.......

This has been a budget build for the past few years...I don't have ALOT of extra money to play with. I'd like to avoid future problems, but I can't just throw it away either.

Thanks for the input though.

if a 90-91 LS 4.400 ring gear is the same, I might have one.

Thanks.

I reassembled the countershaft, but have a question..

Order:
Nut
Washer
Bearing
Bearing
Gear
etc.

On the 2nd bearing from the top, it has an outter race..I pressed everything back together and all, synch's move, everything seems good, except for the 2nd bearing..the race moves a little up and down...the bearing doesn't move, just the outer race a little if this makes since.

Is this normal, as I can't remember how it was before I took it apart..

Ok, cool.

Makes me feel better. Everything is tight together, but that race is a little loose..it doesn't look like it would affect anything, but I wanted to double check.

Thanks.
