Default How to make a boosted 4cyl sound good?

Im just wondering if anyone here has a 4cyl boosted that actually sounds good, a nice deep tone, every time i go to the track here all the boosted civics still sound like rice and just like ****, it just doesnt sound "good" or "exotic"

like a wrx with a good exhaust sounds like sex (yes i know its a different engine design), a supra sounds good (6cyl), but is it possible to make a honda 4cyl sound good? whats the receipe?

full 3" exhaust, cat, no cat? resonator? quality muffler? cheap muffler? open dumptube?

the bigger the exhaust, the better they sound, to me at least..

i hated how my 3'' exhaust with 2 resonators sounded. it was a side-exit.

i made a 3'' that went to the axle, then went up to 3.5'', with only 1 short 3.5'' resonator. sounds SO MUCH BETTER. low, throaty, and mean

we're building a 4'' exhaust for an EK soon. i think it'll sound amazing. looking forward toit.

I have always been under the impression that the diameter of the pipe didn't make a pitch difference. length certainly does (longer=lower)but i thought that diamter only may cause a bit more resonation (hence the bells o musical instruments)
and according to some books i've read on turboed cars, on a 4 cl engine like a honda 3in piping is good to almost 700 hp.......saying i've got 4in exhaust is fun to say though

I run a full 3" with a muffler and it sounds good....a Vibrant muffler might have been a better pick. I've heard a few full 3" exhausts with just a resonator on a Honda and they sound great.

i was running a thermal 3" no cat no resonator, and it sounded ok. now i'm running 3" pipe off dp to 4" dynomax race muffler dumped before first exhaust bend, sounds soooo much better. i would post sound clip but my car's currently torn apart

I have 3" to 4" flare from my turbo to downpipe then full 4" downpipe, then straight to my 4" aluminum exhaust with no resonators or muffler, the only thing i did was turned the end of the 4" down to the ground.

i guess im gonna have to play with the different mufflers and resonators.

What do resonators do really? same thing the muffler does muffle the sound? Im gonna have 3" dp to full 3" exhaust, not sure if to run a cat or not or resonators, i heard no cat makes it sound really rasspy, and i dont want that, after puttin $8,000+ into an engine/turbo setup i want the car to sound like its got power, sound mean, doesnt have to be loud, just a nice tone.

Some of the turbo civics i saw at last track day, sounded like a bone stock with just a weld on fartcan....

diameter of the piping makes quite a difference in sound. varying sizes up and down can do crazy things, along with placement of resonators or mufflers at different lengths in the system.

Open downpipe always sounds the best. It even sounds nasty at idle

I used to run 2.5" and i enjoyed that exhaust. I'm a bigger fan of my 3" w/ a muffler. Here's an old vid of my GSR with the 2.5"....i'll try get one of the 3" soon...

friends hatch with a 2.0gsr with a gt40 sounds better open dp (4") than my other friends gt37 2.0gsr with 3in to a magnaflow, its terrible sounding when its rev'd up. and do a lot of h22's sound like garbage? spikers 600hp accord with 3in all the way back to a magnaflow (or something like it) is the worst sounding boosted car in the world, it might be faster than any other accord in that body style but its the worst sounding of them all.

Open Downpipe .../thread

I ran open dp for 6 months, but just got a ticket for no muffler so i had a local shop put on a 3" straight through to a magnaflow muffler. Doesn't sound as mean, but definitely doesn't sound "ricey".
