For the past couple of days my car has progressively smelled more like a dead animal. I've checked under, and in the engine bay...
Any thoughts on why my car smells dead?

 

Air ducts? spare tire well?

Its bacteria and dirt and stuff. Clean out the car really good, wash the carpets and spray fabreeze or something...

 

Check for **** stains on the seats,old food under the seats,and water leaks.

check under the dash near the vents and see if it might be coming from there. I've heard of mold growing around there

 

hmm leftover pizza under the seat?? j/p I think if it smelled like someone died then probably is your A/C. Hit the re-circulation to off and let air in it when you drive it to air it out.

 

sex in the R will do that, now just spray some Lysol through the vents and that should fix it, thats what i use to do

 

Check under the spare tire, water might have settled there.

 

Fabrezze rocks nads for getting rid of unwanted smells.

Well, I never bring food in the car... not ever, not even a glass of water.
This is my work car, so I'm not usually musty when I'm in it.
I bathe often.

lol. I left shoes in my old car with the windows open and it rained. That stench never went away. I drove it like that for 2 years then gave the car to my brother. People wouild always say wtf is that smell like a year afterwords.

 

Has happened to me before. *cringes* Smells like ***! Still not sure how it got there

 

I narrowed it down to the passenger floor-mat.
All smells like elderflower now!

for those who can't solve the problem, also check the bumpers for dead bats and the air ducts for mice and stuff.

This is why I'm making my ITR a 2 seater.

 

I would guess that it is mold.. Has your car been out in the wet for long periods of time, if so, you need to take your interior out, and leave it out with the windows down, so it can air out.

 

make sure that you don't have jackass friends such as myself.

tom - who has pissed in other's windshield squirter tanks (in the middle of summer, of course) only to have his friend figure out the smell after 6-7 weeks

 

get some car interiour shampoo and mix it 30 to 70 with water,dont spill it on the seats never tried that. get some brush,like the one you use to wash dishes and glasses, and try to rub it out get a powerful vacum cleaner and try to get all the water from the carpet.
Leave the windows open...

 

or cuz your AC?

 

spray febreeze in th vents and turn the AC on full blast for like 5-10 minutes. all smells should go away.

 

This has come up on "Car Talk" a few times in the past month or so. In one instance, the car vents ended up being full of tiny flies. Apparently there was some food left in the car and flies took up a home, maggots and all, in the vents.

The other story was similar in that there was something "edible" left under the hood of the car. Car Talk guys thought it may have been a piece of roadkill that bounced under there. Well, once again, maggots galore in the engine bay.

Is that pleasant thought or what? Maggots in the R?
