clutch chatter?
i have an ACT HD SS clutch. i guess when the clutch is cold (not shifted at high Rpms and stuff)...and u launch the car do u ever get chatter? as if the dash comes at u? and i think when it warms up then it launches normal? what is definition of clutch chatter? thanx
ya, i had the same problem. same setup too. I got motor mount inserts to keep the engine from movin around, works well for me. and i stilll have that last insert to get in.
IN VTEC, I noticed that we have the smae setup for clutch and flywheel. I was wondering if you have experienced any problems. About 5k miles ago I started hearing like a grinding noise coming from the tranny area, but when you put the clutch in it goes away. I have no problem shifting or anything. Just wondering if you were experiencing anything weird as well.

Subjectively, chatter is the feeling of a low-frequency fore/aft acceleration of the vehicle during a clutch engagement, particularly when launching the vehicle. The frequency is typically between 8-14 Hz.

Just so I get a clear picture of what's going on....
Is this at idle with the tranny in neutral & clutch engaged (pedal up), or while moving with the car in gear?
Is it a constant grinding sound (like two metallics scraping against each other), or does it have a fluttering quality to it (like the intensity goes up and down)?
I'd put the problem somewhere between the clutch release bearing or the clutch hub. Clutch hub could have a loose spring or something falling off of it, causing it to scrape the face of the pressure plate or the flywheel.

Your description of clutch chatter resembles similar problems in some helicopters known as critical dynamic tailboom modes. A low intensity vibration that is amplified when coinciding with the vehicles natural frequency. I hate small stupid problems that snowball like this one and annoy while driving.
If you have a street disc, or an ACT SS disc, there should be NO chatter. If there is, it is due to a defective unit, which is not uncommon with ACT, or an installation problem. This has become status quo with many of the rebuilds. ACT, CM, CF, ect. Chatter is generally accepted with a pucked disc due to the fact they are race oriented units.

Well. I installed 2 inserts for the front torque bearing mounts. I guess the chatter made the motor vibrate too or wahtever. Either way, since I installed the 2 front mounts, most of the chatter went away. Go figure.
