Default Losing clutch fluid and clutch is slipping - ideas?

My clutch started to slip more and more this week, and I noticed that my clutch fluid was low. It never went dry, but it was low. I also noticed blackish grey stuff floating in the fluid. Any idea what this is? Is the slipping clutch and fluid problem related?

you need to be more specific. are you checking the reservoir or the actual trans? loss of trans fluid and a slipping clutch means that fluid is getting into the clutch housing and your clutch is being killed prematurely. the reservoir being low means that theres a leak somewhere.

how could you look into the trans to see blackish gray stuff floating in the fluid? check you clutch master cylinder under the dash they usually go out there first if its dry look for leaks by the slave cylinder. fix that first. flush out the fluid since theres crap in it. then if the clutch is still slipping you probably need a new one.

same thing happend to me on the freeway all my fluid was lost and it wouldnt shift into any gears, your master cylinder is bad and needs a new one and as far as the stuff floating around its dirt from your bad clutch/master cylinder.

The clutch already slips a good bit with the clutch master cylinder full of fluid. I think it's already shot from having a malfunctioning master cylinder for so long. :-(

Did you replace the master (on firewall) and slave (on tranny) or just the master?

I just checked online. I can get the master and slave for less than $20 so i might as well do both.

The clutch is probably shot, so I'll replace that too along with the axle seals, rear main seal, and any other seals that are in the area when I take the tranny off the block.

Anything else you can think of that I might as well replace while I've got it all apart?

I have a few sites I like to shop at. I'm trying to get most of the parts for this repair at
http://www.coximport.com/

I'm looking at the Exedy clutch master/slave cylinders with an ACT organic clutch kit. I might get a new flywheel if resurfacing is going to cost anywhere near $200.

I have a Clutchmasters clutch and ACT flywheel on my B16A powered Civic and I love it. The ACT clutch seems reputable and costs a little less than the other brands. I always wanted to give ACT a try since I liked their flywheel.

One thing's for sure, I'm going to make sure my clutch cylinders are working correctly before using the new clutch! How can you even tell that the cylinders are starting to fail?

If a slave cylinder is bad, there will be an external leak that you should be able to see. Plus, the fluid level would go down.

A master cylinder can fail two ways.

It can leak fluid out and you would see the fluid. In this case, the fluid level would go down.

A master cylinder can also "back bleed" and you will not see any fluid leaking. The level will never go low due to the fact that it's never leaving the system.

I meant can you figure it out while driving? Like, will you have to push the pedal down almost to the floor to get the clutch to disengage from the flywheel?

trust me though, you know you master cylinder is going out, if one goes out and you replace it the other dose really soon. i replaced my master cylinder and then one week later my slave cylinder went out so even if it shows its good and its just a master clyinder, your gonna want to replace both.

I was just thinking of my other Honda. Maybe I'll just pay $40 and replace the master and slave on both to be safe. It sux your clutch gets eaten up as the cylinders die.
