Car has been running fine for the last 4 months until last night. NO CODES at this timec. Has a good ground on the water neck, valve cover, and tranny. No Vac leaks. Fuel pump kicks on and I have Power.

But every time I turn the key to start the motor it will crank then die. If I hold the key it will run. But as soon as I let off it dies. Every now and then the starter will not engage and make a clicking noise.


I was thinking it could be the main relay but Im not 100% sure because I never had to replace one before. If anyone has any advise on how to fix the problem please tell me. I need to get to work.

When you say "If I hold the key it will run", do you mean it that cranks over or that it actually fires etc. sounds like it is running, not just cranking?

Have you checked, Is it getting spark? Have you check to make sure the injectors are firing - or at least getting signal?

 

check ur fuses first
theres an alt fuse under the dash and a main battery fuse under the hood.

 

Maybe you have a bad ignition switch. theres a recall for the 96-98 or 96-00 civic ignition switches. I remember getting the letter in the mail and it said a bad ignition switch will cause the car to stall out after start up or after driving.
