does it only make the noise while the clutch is engaged and when your driving?? if you push the clutch pedal in all the way does the noise stop??

i want to say that this sounds to me like your input shaft bearing - but its important to know this; you say when you sit at idle you hear the noise..if you press the clutch pedal to the floor, does the noise stop??

I also had a whining noise coming from the same location you are talking about. I replaced the Idler pulley and the whining noise was gone, the grease in the pulley dried up.

If you replace the pulley dont get it from Auto Zone cause its plastic. Buy it from Advanced Auto Parts or the stealership because they are metal.

Could be any bearing in the accessories (PS, Alt., AC compressor), could be a belt tensioner (AC or timing belt), could be the water pump, could be a vacuum leak in a strange place.

You have lots of options
