gun questions...actually alot of questions...
well guys i got some extra money thats come in and im feeling a lil do it yourself and im up for a vacation anyways...i want to attempt to paint my ek....ive helped paint a couple cars before and enjoy doing dumb stuff like valve covers and small panels...but im really wanting to do my own car...i figure even if it doesnt come out show finish ill be happy with a good quality paint job and knowing i tried...lol...i have a cheap gun that i have used for primer and base...i guess if i can use that for primer for this project i will...but i want some opinions on a good base gun and clear gun...im willing to spend a couple dollars...but dont want something overly complicated...my next question was is there a good gun that would work well for the base and clear swapping tips or should i purchase them individually...ive been leaning toward sata because my friend uses em and says they are the best hands down but i know we have alot of badass painters in here and wouldnt mind hearing some opnions...all my supplies is going to be purchased trough metro here in miami i have a account with them and they give me a lil discount...also what about paint...something that will lay down good for a more or less first timer and be forgiving...im leaning towards ppg but wouldnt mind hearing some opnions...thanks in advance and hopefully i can start this next week and start posting the progress...also ill be going from black to midori...anything else i should keep in mind??
Sata, Iwata, Devilbiss (not the cheap ones) are all good guns. I primarily only use 1.3 SATA NR2000's for base, clear. You can find some good deals on used guns if you look around really good and buy smart. I prefer BASF RM Diamont myself, its a very good, quality paint line. One down side is some, not many at all, of the colors do not have the best coverage out there. Up side, its forgiving, easy to spray, many hardeners and reducers to control/tweak out flash times and cure times.

ding ding ding
sata(if you can afford it, i used the 2000nr and it's the best gun i used)
devilbiss(finish line is the cheapest you can do it, it's not the best quality but it's okay for weekend painter)
you might want to get a big tip primer gun and use another smaller tip gun for base and clear.
it's all about technique and skill, i know a guy uses to spray non-hvlp gravity gun better than alot of guys out there.
RM is great stuff, i use then all the time, dupont are great but they are kinda pricey.
spi, matrix, ppg deltron are awesome for their price. top end S&W paint are totally awesome to shoot with, they are usually cheaper than dupont and pgg at the same grade.
i shoot deltron ppg and chromabaseall the time, it's nicer than the base stuff but not so expensive(because people are cheap most of the time)

so u guys are using the same gun for base and clear??...becuase if u can do that then ill go all out and buy a nice gun that will lay both down nicely instead of 2 guns...i plan on messing around with random panels and garbage to try and get a feel for sray patterns and coverage as i can only imagine the more practice the better it will come out...i also wanted to know...out of some of the paint product lines what would also be forgiving when it comes to cutting and buffing...becuase i imagine ill get a run or 2 and ive heard some clears are harder to wetsand then other and less forgiving...thanks for the input guys...trying to pick up my supplies this weekend or fri so whatever i can learn before then will help me out alot...also where can u find good guns used??...i dont know 2 much about them and wouldnt know what to look for as in condition and of the guns ok or not...so i guess buying a used gun would be a risk for me...what are some signs to look at with a used gun???,..thanks again guys
I have 2 NR's for base and 1 NR for clear, all 1.3 size. You can base and clear w/ the same gun, just have to clean it in between, its not ideal but do-able. Be aware of possible contamination like metallic particles getting into a solid color /clear type of situations. Check out ebay or local craigslist type stuff. Test out the gun asap, if you do go used. Its pretty obvious if there well taken care off, it doesn't take long to strip and clean them. Buffing and polishing takes good tools/materials just like painting, so thats a factor in how easy it will be for you.
i actually just found a sata 2000nr on ebay but the guys is local in hollywood fl and im in miami...so im gonna try to check it out tomorrow...gun looks to be in good condition heres the link...what do u think is fair for a offer???....

There was a buy it now for round 200 on that one, which would be a deal if its as described. I would be a little leery of a seller w/ low feedback. Also would kindly demand an immediate tracking # when shipped in a set time frame from payment. From the crappy pics, it does look nice. IMO the Sata NR2000/3000 and the Iwata LPH 400 are some of the top preforming HVLP guns right now. Even if a used gun doesn't spray perfect, completely stripping/cleaning may fix it.

yo waddup miami. i think the gun is a good buy. damn, a satajet for less than a buck! they're over 500 brand new.
i spray with 3m's pps spray guns. both are 1.4's. they're great for even the fine metallics and high solids clears. I never went wrong with them.
I seal with my dbiss gti. great with metallics also, not so much clear. I bought the gti and it came with 3 fluid tips. the 1.3, 1.4, and the 1.5. It was about alil more than 300.
I hear its all preference. satas and iwatas got great ergonomics, spray patterns and material atomization- but are real pricey. the 3m was about 400 and is a tough competitor among the two listed above.
as for used parts, if you can afford it, get it new.

well im actually going to go look at in person and check it out...i have a small portable compressor im thinking about taking just to hook it up while im there and spray something out of it..i guess well see what happens...i figure since its only a 20 min drive i can loose much might as well check it out
well the money isnt the issue but i figure if its in great condition as discribed and i can pick it up local it might be worth a shot...if not i think im going to just buy it new and sray both base and clear out of it...just make sure i clean it well before switching over...im not broke lol...but not balling enough to spend a grand on guns
i sent him a message and asked him what he was looking to get for it...i figure its gonna be in the 200's...so im willing to pay i guess 250-300 for it...if he wants more then that i might as well buy it new
