On the other side of the "rare car" argument
Well i'm picking up a car tomorrow night that is even more rare in the U.S. than the ITR.http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...&car_year=2002 While negotiating the price, i was debating with the owner over what kind of premium over blue-book value that a rare car actually deserves. I ended up paying over blue-book, but not the price listed. I'm feeling like the ITR is the only car built within the last 15 which deserves such a premium, but i guess it's all supply and demand.
The ITR was an iconic car which started a movement in the industry and changed the way car companies thought, and eventually the way they designed and built their cars. It also spawned so many imitators that it's comical. Also, at the time there was no other car quite like it, and it was gawked at by others when seen on the road, and still is. What that car achieved in racing, and what it achievd in just the whole package as a sports-car is legendary. The handling, the brakes, the raw thrills one can squeeze from this front-drive car with a $23,000 price is something that doesn't come along often in an automobile. Maybe i'm giving it too much credit, but i truly believe that it is a more important car than other rare cars such as the one i'm picking up. Most here would probly agree with me but does anyone think i'm wrong?

Nice choice. The s54 M roady's a bit more rare than the older ones with the e36 m3 motor; OP's has a 315hp e46 motor under the hood. The main advantage these cars have over a s2000 is torque. My older coupe has ~75ft/lbs more tq than an s2000 and that is with the older, sissier e36 m3 motor. Post up photos, I'd love to see it! Almost ended up with a roadster but had to get a coupe so the dog could come with...

You're probly seeing the older ones like .Ash said..Not easy to tell them apart except for the massive rear wheel/tire combo..Only 1,600 M roadsters with the S54 motor were built for the U.S...Believe it or not, many were stolen, and as usual, many were lost to accidents..Probably about 1,000 left..
BTW, just got back from picking up the car in Jersey...Sweet little car with tons of torque..Very easy to kick out the ***-end though..Until i know the cars limits i'll be glad for the computer interceding and saving me from a snow-bank....

I'm a long time BMW guy as well. I see lots of both, but like I said the new motor ones are more rare.

if we were to bump up the 15 years to 20 the Grand National GNX comes to mind......you'll pay upwards of 30k these days. I'd love to have one personally.........

Yeah, GNX = drag racer. The rest of these things can actually turn. I love M roadsters and M coupes, but I don't consider either of them "rare" regardless of what engine is under the hood.

In defense of my coupe, I'd say ~2870 examples over 4 years is rare. As for the roady, well there are a bit more of them...

if you can find an M-roadster for sale over here you'd be lucky

agree....I'd like to own a stoplight-to-stoplight type car though. I expect my R would still be more fun but putting the macho men driving red corvettes and mustang GT's to shame would be very satisfying.
