Going to buy a trailer.....
Depends on what you are going to pull it with. If you are looking for the least weight, then get an open center trailer (plus you can work on the car from under the trailer if necessary). Make sure the wheel/rim is not a half size (i.e. 14.5"). Try to find one with "Duralube" axles, they will last longer. Get rear axle electric brakes (common). Type R will fit on a 16" trailer with some room in front for a cooler. Look for a "Beaver Tail"
aka "Dove Tail" trailer (helps with getting the car on and off the trailer. New you can find a simple one for about $1600. Used you can find one for about $1000. Good luck.

Dove Tail
Electic brakes on both axles is a good idea and make sure you get the longest ramps that they can make that will slide under the trailer. I got six footers but still have to use wood "helper" ramps so I don't scrape my front lip. Big D rings.
A winch mount (what happens if you blow up the motor?) and a spare tire are the things I overlooked when I bought mine....

Oh yeah! Call Golden Gate Trailers in Charlotte and Trailers of the east coast in Mocksville. You can get some good baseline prices on new trailers, they may even have some used trailers. Look in some newspapers and car trading magazines.
I am in the midst of trailer shopping as well, and I may have good news for you.
First, what I have found.
The market for used trailers around here sucks right now. I have found used stuff for more than new, and anything I have found for under $1500 has been home-built crap.
The Trading Post seems to be the best place to find ALL of the trailer dealers in NC. I called all of them and found out brands, prices, features, manufacturers, and availability. This narrowed the search down to 2 trailers for me: (1) Kaufman 16' full deck and (2) Superior 16' full deck. Everything else was too much $$ for what you get.
Best price for the Kaufman is direct from Lexington for about $1500, best price on the Superior is $1600 from D and S motors in Sanford. Then I started researching the differences. The Superior has the deck built into the frame and uses a double-A, the K uses a deck on frame, single A. Talking to people who own both, the K has shoddy cuts and welds, and the Superior is much better built. Otherwise, the 2 are very similar. Both are available for about $200 less with an open center.
Guess which one I'm going to get.
Now for the good news. A club (THSCC) supporter who owns a shop here in Cary, NC, also wants to buy a Superior. At my request, he called the manufacturer direct in GA and asked about becoming a distributor. Requires a 5 trailer order. Steve (the guy) will sell the other 4 at close to his cost, probably about a $200 discount.
If you're in, all we need is 2 more people. I have cash in hand, ready to buy. Email me for more info!

More trailer info. I'm going freaking trailer crazy around here. First, there is a LOT of good information that I recorded from members of our club at the following link. Jim Pastorius has a Superior and responded to my survey in the link. HIGHLY recommended:

Re: brakes. Big, strong tow rig = one axle is OK. Wimpy tow rig = get 2 axles.
I should mention that the trailers from Superior can be ordered to spec -- brakes, stake pockets, length, etc. Also, I have no affiliation with this company except that I really, really want to buy one for as little $$$ as possible.

Thanks for all the info guys...I friend from work is a fishing buddy with the owner of Kraftsman trailers in Ramseur NC. I went by there today and checked out a 16' solid deck trailer with the dove tail and electric brakes on the rear axle. I went around their shop and got to see them building several trailers there.I was very impressed with their operation. I gave him a deposit on one until Monday so I can decide if I want it or not. It is priced at $1500 with a lifetime warranty on the frame. I am not sure about the axles, but I can't see them being a problem until many miles from now....and they are the kind Starnes mentioned..ez lube? I think he called it. It also comes with 6' slide out ramps. I have looked and priced a lot of trailers here in NC and GA....this was the best deal I have seen so far...plus they are close to my home...well almost close...about an hour drive.
Oh...I have a Dodge diesel to pull it with..so weight isn't a huge problem. I would like to know your guys thoughts on this...is it a good deal....does anyone have any experience with Kraftsman in Ramseur?
Thanks!!!!
PS...my spelling sucks...so read through

I need to find a trailer also. My problem is that I want it as light as possible - which means not a big selection from what I've researched, unless I go with aluminum. Anyone know of any trailer manufacturers that make good quality and lightweight (less than 1,000 lbs) 16' trailers ? Aluminum trailers are what I want, but $3,000 isn't worth it to me... anybody know of good deals on aluminum trailers too?

pretty good quality..

$1500 is a pretty good price. Is it a wood floor or metal floor? Something to think about is the how high the fenders are on the trailer. Measore the deck to the top of the fender (guessing somewhere between six to ten inches). Then measure (your car) the ground to the bottom of your door. Basically if the fender is higher, you may either a) have to climb through the window, thus leaving the window down, or b) put the car on the far right side of the trailer so you can barely open the door to squeeze out of the car. This is the problem I ran into when I had my open trailer. Another thing is to get a pretty wide trailer if you can. Also, make sure you get good tires. Most companies use something like Carlise (or something like that) tires. They are very inexpensive trailer tires, but I never had a problem with them. Make sure you get steel belted radial tires...smoother on the road.
The trailer is a solid diamond plate welded steel floor. The fenders are 8 inches off the floor of the trailer and it is 82 inches wide between the fenders. It might be close on my Ferrari to get it on there but I think the Integra will be just fine. Thanks for all the help and suggestions!!!!
I'll be at VIR this coming weekend...with the BMW CCA...so stop by and check it out if you are there.
