Somebody Please Tell me the REAL Best Way to get to Summit
I have in my hand 3 completely different sets of directions. One is useless since cant even find the roads/towns on a map.
The others are opposites. One suggests taking 77 north out of Charlotte to 81.
The other says to go through Raleigh/Durham to Richmond, then north on 95.
then the directions become another mystery as they don't match with my trusty road atlas.
How about some clear help on this one?
Best way from Charlotte to the track gates, towing a 4500lb trailer (ie: not too many mountainous 2 lane roads).
Thanks in Advance.

Going up I-81 from charlotte will be your most direct route. From there it is exit 323 (i believe) a few miles north of Winchester, Va.
There are a few hills in southern virginia, but nothing a competent tow vehicle cannot handle (although it may breathe hard for a few minutes). There are no huge grades however.

Ram 250 TD + camper + ITR + trailer = 1100F egt's @ 16 psi.
I had to take the tranny out of OD to keep the temps down a little... but after that climb it is easy sailing.
There is another route thru Greensboro... but since you are not running the Gumball3000... stick to interstates.

fyi... avoid downtown Charlotte traffic after 3:00pm tomorrow...
Make sure get thru before 6:30am (after 9:30am it will be ok)... but after 3:00 (up till 6:30) it is nasty bad.

What I'd do:
77 - ~125 miles
81 - ~230 miles
VA-7 (exit 315) - head east (I beleive it's a left at the exit)
left on Route 632
right on Route 761
Turn right
entrace to the track is 300 yards on the right.
Coming to Raleigh seems WAY out of the way.

Add another vote for I-81. 95 will be WAY out of your way and much more crowded. There is a distinct possibility you will hit DC at rush hour (which lasts until 8:00-9:00 on Fridays).

It's not that difficult to hop on US 220 N in Greensboro, then pick up I-81 in Roanoke, especially since I-85 intersects US 220. Much nicer drive, and not much traffic at all between Greensboro and Roanoke.
I-77 to I-81 took me ~45 minutes longer than US 220 to I-81. Just a thought, and have a safe trip!
